A bitter dispute within McMaster University's business school, featuring allegations of harassment, bullying and abuse, has led to the resignation of the school's high-profile dean, former business executive Paul Bates.

"Comments we have received on the morale and culture of the school use metaphors of toxicity and virulence, speak of a divide between generations, and draw attention to a habit of relentless verbal assault," says a report released this week by a university advisory committee. "It seems [this culture]has been the reputation of the school for quite a while".

The report outlines years of infighting at McMaster's DeGroote School of Business and highlighted the difficulties universities face when they hire non-academics to run business schools.

McMaster hired Mr. Bates in 2004 because it was looking for a business leader who could give the school prominence. The university wanted someone "who had a visible public profile and contacts [and]who would be a strong fundraiser and could serve as a positive external face on behalf of the school," the report says.

Upon reviewing evidence of intimidation and discrimination, the three-person body recommended “lengthy suspensions” (confirmed as between two and five years) without pay, benefits or access to university premises for three people, and recommended reduced suspensions (up to two years) for two others. A sixth person received a formal written reprimand. All six must undergo sensitivity, harassment and conflict-resolution training

Among the tribunal’s most egregious findings was the revelation that Mr. Bates’ opponents had schemed to keep his supporters from progressing in their careers at the business school. The “Mac guys” were found in some cases to have “engaged in conduct which corrupted, tainted, interfered with, and compromised the integrity of the tenure/permanence and promotion” processes within the faculty.

Some, for example, failed to declare their bias before participating in meetings to determine the career progress of Mr. Bates’ supporters – crossing the line between tough questioning at promotion committee meetings, and exercising “group vendettas or vindictiveness.”

McMaster Bates??

In a public company with this type of news in the public realm, they would be terminated, with cause.
I do hope the poor bugger that was hung out to dry by this conspiracy sues their asses off.
