Calgary police switching to black and white cars

Calgarians will soon start to notice that police cars in the city are black and white instead of blue and white.

The Calgary Police Service (CPS) is beginning the gradual process of replacing its entire fleet with Ford Interceptors that sport the new colour scheme.

The change was necessary because Ford ended production of its Crown Victoria model that CPS has used for many years.

The Interceptors were selected as the new standard cruiser after a pilot project tested out various replacement models and feedback to the black and white decals was gathered from the public.

“The move to a black-and-white theme comes after research identified numerous benefits including enhanced visibility and public recognition, improved officer and public safety and economic efficiencies,” police said in a written release.

CPS expects to save about $6,000 per car — partly because of a less expensive decal design — but it could be up to five years before the entire fleet is replaced.

Current SUVs used by police will also be replaced with Ford Explorers.
