Earthquake hits west of Vancouver Island

Earthquakes Canada says a "moderate" quake has hit just west of Vancouver Island.

The agency says the 5.7 magnitude quake hit at about 6:20 a.m. local time.

It says the quake was lightly felt across northern Vancouver Island in Port Alice, Port McNeill, Tahsis, Sointula and Alert Bay — all located in the northern part of the island.

There are no reports of any damage or injuries. No tsunami is expected.

Bonnie Overland, a resident of Port Alice on Vancouver Island, said she was awakened by the shaking but thought it was her dog scratching the bed.

"It lasted a few seconds and we absolutely felt it," she said.

John Cassidy, a seismologist with Natural Resources Canada, said quakes are common in the region as it is at a fault area where the Juan de Fuca Plate meets the Explorer Plate.

This is proof-positive that fracking causes earthquakes

there is a theory that hydraulic fracturing may actually' help' PREVENT MAJOR QUAKES by releasing a lot of minor quakes. Minor quakes are no big deal. Major ones are real bummers.

But, say goodbye to Richmond, say hello to the Richmond bank spawning reefs...

If that is the case, we should emphasize our efforts on the Alberta/ BC border...maybe we can push BC into the Pacific and have Ocean Front Property in Banff..

Also, no more worries about a western pipeline, Rocky Mountain House would be a great place for a port..
