Gone are the days when kids moved out for college and never came home again. New research shows 36% of young adults are still living at home.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - More than a third of young American adults live with his or her parents, a 40-year high, a study released Thursday by the Pew Research Institute suggests.

In 2012, 36 percent of Americans aged 18 to 31 -- or 21.6 million -- lived with their parents, compared with 18.5 million in 2007, the year the Great Recession began.

That's because most manufacturing jobs have gone to China, India, Pakistan, Mexico. Hell even telephone sales jobs are in India. So the young people go and get themselves a great education, and the only jobs available are at McDonalds.

It has something to do with manufacturing jobs leaving but that is not the only reason.
Today we have young people who do not have the skill to even ask for the jobs waiting
for someone to fill. The high cost of rent, and social conditions have a lot to do with it.
We have had a couple of grandkids come and live with us for a while and now they are
doing quite well. They are all working and out on their own.
We had a son come and live with us for a couple of months when the marriage broke up
he's ok on his own. We have an older daughter living with us right now. Good thing too.
She is wondering what to do with her life now. She was a single mom and put her kids
through school and after our grand daughter is now in a really good job with a post secondary
education, the oldest boy is a full fledged electrician and the middle son is a fireman.
My point is we have a mobile society and there are all kinds of reasons for people to move
back in to the folks home for a while. This old farmhouse is a big place and there is always
someone here for one reason or another.

This is what families do, they take care of their own. Just because a kid is over 18 doesn't negate the fact that they are still your kid.

Exactly. My parents died some years ago but the family carries on. We have children and grandchildren and will no doubt have great grandchildren one day. We don't live in the same house anymore but the whole family gets together as often as we can, usually once or twice a month.

O my God! Really? That's normal and common in the rest of the world. But, O wow! Something like just just shouldn't happen in America, the land of individualism.

Strange that. So why do children live with their parents in China well into their late 20's as a norm? Shouldn't they be moving out now?

Honestly, I bet some of the most successful people have lived with their parents longer as a way to save money while going to school... assuming they are lucky enough not to come from such a disfunctional family as to feel the need to run the moment they can.

And because the top 10% richest want more and more money and the gov'ts spend vastly more than they earn which leads to more poor and fewer middle class people.
Living at home with a couple more people is quite a bit cheaper than living alone in an apartment.
