Suspect jumps into Columbia River to dodge police

Mounties in Trail, B.C., say a 28-year-old man is believed to have drowned after jumping into a river while running from police.

Cpl. Dan Moskaluk says police were trying to execute a warrant on Andrew Lee Evans on Wednesday when he jumped out of a second-storey window, dodged police and jumped into the Columbia River.

Mokslauk says officers tried to coax Evans to shore but he swam to the centre of the river and went over rapids.

Moskaluk says police were trying to execute a fairly routine warrant on a breach of probation case.

“It was our intention to conduct it in a safe manner, and Mr. Evans chose to endanger himself and paid the price for it,” Moskaluk said. “He is missing and presumed drowned.”

The Independent Investigations Office was called but has chosen not investigate

Police are asking members of the public in Canada and across the nearby U.S. border to watch for Evans’s body.
