Hey Greenie Weenies this one is for you!

A train carrying crude oil derailed overnight in the heart of Lac-Mégantic in Quebec's Eastern Townships, sparking a major fire that has brought firefighters from the town and neighbouring municipalities to the area, and led to the evacuation of 1,000 people from their homes.

Witnesses reported between four and six explosions overnight in the town of about 6,000 people. The derailment happened at about 1 a.m. ET, about 250 kilometres east of Montreal.

It is not yet known if there are any casualties, but several people have been reported missing and are feared dead.
The teary-eyed mayor of Lac-Mégantic, Colette Roy-Laroche, said emergency services are doing everything possible to deal with the crisis.

"We have deployed all resources to ensure that we can support our citizens," she said.

A spokesperson for Quebec's Environment Ministry says 73 rail cars filled with crude oil were involved.

The fire, which can be seen for several kilometres, has spread to a number of homes. Authorities say some 30 buildings were affected.

"It's dreadful," said Lac-Mégantic resident Claude Bedard. "It's terrible. We've never seen anything like it. The Metro store, Dollarama, everything that was there is gone."
Firefighters called in from U.S.

More than 100 firefighters, some as far away as Sherbrooke, Que., and the United States, were on the scene early Saturday morning to bring the flames under control.

A large but as-yet undetermined amount of fuel is also reported to have spilled into the Chaudière River.

The derailed train belongs to Montreal Maine & Atlantic, which owns more than 800 kilometres of track serving Maine, Vermont, Quebec and New Brunswick, according to the company's website.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation. A spokesperson for Quebec provincial police said it is still early too early to say what caused it.

No engineers/crew on board. Kinda odd is it not?

One confirmed dead in Quebec train explosions - The Globe and Mail

The train’s brakes and safety system were functional when the conductor left, according to Montreal Maine & Atlantic. Company spokesman Christophe Journet confirmed the train had stopped in a siding near Nantes, 12-kilometres to the east of Lac-Mégantic for the routine shift change.

The conductor inspected the train before leaving for a local hotel, a replacement crew was slated to come later during the night. Sometime before 1 a.m., the train’s load of 73-cars broke loose and began rolling towards the small town, with the locomotive breaking free.

“Why the train’s brakes stopped working, why it left alone, we don’t know,” said Mr. Journet.

“We’re not sure what happened, but the engineer did everything by the book. He had parked the train and was waiting for his relief ... somehow, the train got released,” Montreal, Maine & Atlantic vice president of marketing Joseph R. McGonigle told Reuters.

A six member team from the Transport Safety Board has been dispatched to investigate.

They said the conductor parked the train in Nantes which is a routine procedure. He waits there for another train heading west that also stops in Nantes a couple of hours later. There the conductor and crew change trains to head back to their home station.

The whole center of town was flattened and they have no idea how many people are dead. They had evacuated 1000 people but this afternoon the had to widen the evacuation area because of toxic smoke.

My thoughts and prayers are with them.

Boom boom boom boom! Our reliance on oil will be the death of us all. We got along fine without it for a million years or so. It has only been around for a little over a hundred years and already we don't know how to live without it. Bunch o' junkies.

Christ Almighty isn't a man allowed to express his own opinion?

that was not an opinion, it was written as a statement of fact. Read it again.

The fact is, we are healthier, more knowledgeable, and live far longer lives in far more comfort than we have in all of written history let alone the last 1000 years. His STATEMENT is a lie.

I could pick that apart too. Healthier appearing boosted by multiple drugs, while rates of cancer and diabetes are escalating. Longer lives hooked up to tubes and wires. Comforts often financed by money we can't afford to borrow. Facts can be very deceptive...............like politicians!
