All to often we hear about the nutbars- Lots of great teachers.

Yes, there are. The press usually only reports the shocking stuff....it sells more ad space. But the good teachers (or police officers or doctors, etc) are out there...and so are the stories. You might just have to hunt a bit for them unfortunately.
