Protest group plans July 4 march on Washington with loaded rifles

<H3 property="dc.creator">By Peter Hermann, May 07, 2013 05:44 PM EDT

An Iraq war veteran and Internet talk show host is trying to gather thousands of protesters to march into the District on Independence Day with loaded rifles on their backs.

But if Adam Kokesh follows through with his July 4 plans — 2,500 people have signed up for the cause — he and his makeshift band will be met on the Arlington Memorial Bridge by two police forces packing guns of their own.

Kokesh, 31, and D.C. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier say they want to work together to ensure a peaceful airing of grievances. But the chief says only one side can have guns: hers. And she’ll have backup from the U.S. Park Police, which will also position officers at the District line.

“If you’re coming here to protest government policy, great,” Lanier said Tuesday on her monthly appearance on NewsChannel 8, reacting to the group’s plan to cross the Potomac River from Arlington National Cemetery. “If you’re coming here to break the law, we’ll take action.”

Lanier added, “There’s a pretty good chance we’ll meet them on the D.C. side of the bridge.”

Kokesh is calling the event an “Open Carry March” but described it as a general demonstration against “tyranny,” not a protest against specific gun laws.

Not if the cops don't over react.
I'm counting on the cops overreacting.

“We will march with rifles loaded and flung across our backs to put the government on notice that we will not be intimidated and cower in submission to tyranny,” Kokesh wrote on his Web site. “Should we meet physical resistance, we will peacefully turn back, having shown that free people are not welcome in Washington. . . . We are truly saying in the SUBTLEST way possible that we would rather die on our feet than live on our knees.”
That's Kokesh's notion of subtle?

What is happening to America is it is quietly sinking into its own climactic end. Polarized politics
Then there are those good ole boys who used to have all the say before them immigrants came
and changed everything. There are the social constructionists both on the left who are all for the
war on global warming to making sure children don't throw snowballs. The other side wrap up in
the flag and claim Jesus will save them but the rest of you are hell bound.
The end of the world is coming, there are those now who don't believe we got into outer space.
I have had people on the both sides of the boarder tell me commercial jets send out Chem trails
with chemicals to control us.
Every nut case who used to gather in small clusters and wait for disaster are now out preaching it.
We are slowly becoming part of it north of he boarder as well. We are more educated and less
smart, what an equation. These people are no different they believe guns and these so called
individual rights are all that matters. On the other side are people who want us to become domesticated
sheep and there is nothing in between. No this march is not a good idea, and if they take weapons
loaded that close to the White House and there is trouble, the security forces will shoot a lot of people
and it would serve them right.

The police should be more concerned about all the criminals with guns that walk the streets every night. Not a rag tag bunch with a couple of rifles that are not out to hurt anyone. Instead the police and some politicians will prefer to make criminals out of people that are trying to protect their rights from nutbars like the so called educators we have been discussing in other threads.

Betcha that there is no lack of gangs and organized crime that are smacking their chops with anticipation since everyone will be gathered along the fringes of this potential war zone and all the local cops in attendance, there ought to be many unattended homes and businesses ripe for the plucking.

Pretty ironic really

OK, so when you know the law and deliberately violate it, that's the police and politicians making a criminal of you?

Quite often yes. The Long Gun Registry is a prime example. Rifles we owned for many years were all of a sudden illegal to own without getting a licence for them. Ploiticians quite often try to pass laws that violate citizens rights. The only way to stop them is a show of strength.

but the best was to demonstrate a "show of strength" is through the vote not marching around with loaded rifles

That requires having politicians worth voting for. As a rule one issue candidates are more of a problem than they are worth. Probably the best way is through the courts and have bad laws thrown out. Not sure if that works well in the US system.

Also it is rather pointless to have laws that make criminals out of law abiding taxpayers that criminals ignore and police do not enforce against criminals.

Occupy Wall Street?
No thanks. I don't like New York.

Whining is a show of strength?
