I think that the legal system should find a way to charge those responsible for such acts in an aggressive fashion.... The charge of rape is obvious enough, but maybe there's a way to include manslaughter charges in the mix. Cyberspace or not, they took actions that had a devastating result

At very least, keep these d*ouche-bags spending their future earnings in court/legal costs . They may or may not have the charges stick (hopefully they do), but at least they will be reminded daily of the damage they caused as the case remains in the public eye and they burn through years of income and waste their lives that way.

Personally, I'd like to see a law regarding the publication of private photographs without permission. I think we need it. It's so simple to upload a picture of someone and not even think about the consequences.

Anything you upload to fascistbook becomes their property, what is really sad is they run that sh*t and run ads at the same time.

I fail to see the connection to publishing porn of someone without their knowledge or consent.

They are hosting and OWN that porn(?) and earning from it. There are liabilities. They need better screening of uploads and immediate notification to police of any illegal activity.

I wonder what can be accomplished in a meeting with a guy who plays attack ads

Attack Ads are not a creation of Harper, nor are they the issue being discussed here in this thread. Step out your obvious partisan position for a moment and try and address the OP without de-railing it with worthless snipes. Or don't.

I read the article and it sounds like the Justice System failed this girl. As to the bullying that followed the sexual assault: This is a new way of conducting business, but bullying is nothing new. I remember young ladies who were identified as ****s, often unjustly, and bullying has always been a part of our society. Perhaps if we did not protect the privacy of young people who conduct themselves in such a disgusting way and published their names it might work as a deterrent. I don't know that new laws regarding the internet and privacy are going to stop the age old mob mentality of singling out a weak individual and victimizing them.

Good discussion here this morning, first of all the Internet is the last of the wild west.
While I am hesitant with regard to regulation, it should be noted that telephone use
and TV and other mediums have regulations. You cant' use the mail for such purposes
so why the Internet without any rules? Bullying that is criminal in nature has be be
curbed or at least blunted. People should not be subjected to such things that can cause
bodily harm or death.
We have managed to regulate the other avenues of information, automobiles have regulation
and so on. We might not find a solution at the moment but we must begin to look for one.
If the Premier of NS, the Prime Minister and others want to explore avenues of progress I for
on applaud them. The Prime Minister might not be my favourite person however I have to
congratulate him for at least making an effort and at least being interested.
The biggest problems in our society are not going to be solved with legislation alone. We
have to open the door to dialogue, and the input of the public to change the minds of others
so we collectively find such actions socially unacceptable. When we achieve that in many
cases the heavy hand of legislation takes a minor role.

Excuse me, Mister Author but you seem to be reading your own spin into what I said. Harper is MAINTAINING a nasty trait in bully circles. You're right. He didn't invent bullying attacks. He's only being today's example.

Toss the Young Offender's Act out when it comes to this publication ban crap.

These goofs and they are goofs had no issues with their names and faces going public on social media.

Let the public know who they are then maybe victims will get justice against the goofs.

I don't want unknown goofs running around on my streets, I want to know who the goofs are so I can treat them like the goofs they are.

I want them to wear their rapist goof azz shame in public, not hiding their goof azzes by law.

Your post has little to do with this thread and yet again you drag baggage over here in an attempt to derail. Well done.

:-(Way back in grade 9 a fella started a rumour that a really pretty girl, also in our form, had spent the night with him, and they had had sex...........all night.

True or not it spread like wildfire and the girl, harrassed and denigrated, finally left our school.

Nothing new, just now you can see the results the same day...................wonderful:roll:

Horrible stuff !!!

Was Leah NOT bullied? Publicly called out? Given names not her own? So what if it's online or on TV. If Harper's so great, why does he have to belittle? What he has to offer is no better.

Well spun

Are you done knashing your teeth and tearing at your clothes? I am sure that the PM has heart enough to understand that this is a tragedy. Otherwise he wouldn't have bothered to grant an audience. I would make that statement to all previous serving Prime Ministers btw including Jean Chretien.

I'm not going to address your ridiculous comparisons to politics. If you want to take this further start another thread.

No Knashing. No teeth. The reaction is entirely your own. The comparison is only ridiculous because you disagree. That makes you no better than the examples set by "diplomacy"

Are you really so insensitive to bullying that it has become matter of course to you?
