City permit values more than triple since 2005

Building permits topped $773 million in 2012, smashing the previous record of $548 million set in 2011, according to the City of Regina's monthly building permit report released Wednesday.

Last year marks the 10th year in the past 11 in which Regina has broken the previous year's record for building permits. The city has seen a decade of steadily rising building permit values, starting at $140 million in 2002, $215 million in 2003, $218 million in 2004, $241 million in 2005, $276 million in 2006, $337 million in 2007, $342 million in 2008 and $458 million in 2009.

In 2010, $426.8 million in permits were issued - fourth-highest in the city's 110-year history.

Residential construction led the way in 2012, with 1,324 permits issued for 2,720 housing units for a total permit value of $402.5 million, a 73-per-cent increase over the total residential permit value of $231.8 million issued in 2011.

While single-detached houses still dominate the residential construction market (1,135 permits issued for a permit value of $218.5 million versus 794 permits issued for $147.3 million in 2011), multiple-unit buildings also saw a substantial increase in 2012.
