An infant was placed with social workers after police found the child inside a car they had just pulled over because the driver was intoxicated, police in Prince Albert say.

The 34-year-old man behind the wheel was charged with impaired driving, driving while suspended and driving an unregistered vehicle.

Police said they were also considering charges of failing to stop for police.

They also charged a 27-year-old female passenger with public intoxication and child endangerment.

Police said when they found the three, the driver was spinning the vehicle in circles in an intersection.

It happened about 3 p.m. CST on Nov. 13.

The episode provides a dramatic illustration of ongoing issues relating to alcohol in Prince Albert, where police say public intoxication is a growing problem.

According to police, over the course of the past weekend, from Friday night to Monday morning, officers responded to 210 calls for service.

As a result, 46 people were arrested with 25 of those being for public intoxication.

Three of them had to be taken to a detoxification center.

Police said most of the calls related to intoxicated persons and disturbances.

Saturday night was the busiest, with 62 calls.

In another notable case, very early Sunday morning, police said a 19-year-old man was found passed out in his car at a drive-thru restaurant.

Even though the man was unconscious, his foot was on the brake but the car was still in drive.

Officers positioned a patrol car directly in front of the man's vehicle and then attempted to rouse him.

It took several minutes for him to awaken and gain the physical dexterity to unlock the door.

He was removed from the vehicle without further incident and charged.
