What is AP style for the city of Jerusalem?
Friday morning, The Associated Press blasted this tweet for a story on Gaza-Israel conflict: “Air raid sirens wail in Jerusalem, signaling a possible rocket attack aimed at Israel's capital: Air raid sirens wail in Jerusalem -KH.” Just over a half hour later, the AP issued a “correction” tweet: “Air raid sirens in Jerusalem signal a possible rocket attack aimed at Israel's self-declared capital: Air raid sirens wail in Jerusalem -KH (correction).”
The only difference? Changing the language from “Israel’s capital” to “Israel’s self-declared capital.” So why the correction? There’s only one line in the AP Stylebook entry on Jerusalem, which states, "The city in Israel stands alone in datelines.”
