Three-Mile Island experiences mystery shutdown. Everybody panic. No, seriously, EVERYBODY PANIC
Plant official: No danger to public
DAUPHIN COUNTY, Pa. —
Three Mile Island experienced an automatic shutdown at 2:20 p.m. Thursday, plant officials said.
Officials said the amount of radiation released was so small it is not measurable.
Residents in the area are hearing a loud noise, which is caused from steam being released, officials said.
Plant spokesperson Ralph DeSantis said there is no health risk and the public is not in danger.
"There's absolutely no danger whatsoever to the public health and safety. We have design features in the plant that when something unusual occurs in the plant, the plant would automatically shut down and that's what happened today," DeSantis said.
The plant was running at full capacity when a mechanism triggered the shutdown.
Officials are currently investigating the exact cause of the shutdown.
