Actually, in the comics (at least the ones in the past few years) she is highly intelligent and has been able to get out of trouble on her own on more than one occasion. Of course, with DC changing everything around with "The New 52" direction, origin stories and the lives of all the DC superheroes (and the people around them) have totally changed from what many people may remember them to be. For example, in the current DC universe, both Ma and Pa Kent have passed away before Clark Kent even made it to Metropolis.
