NORTH BAY, ONT. - Lawyers blame low self-esteem and childhood bullying for why a North Bay mom looked for online attention from men by sharing pornographic photos of her young daughters.
“I find that type of conduct sick and depraved. For a mother to do this is just beyond me,” said Ontario Court Justice Jean-Gilles Lebel.
The judge reluctantly accepted a recommendation from the Crown and the mother's lawyer for two years less a day in jail and three years of probation after that.
There are few criminal cases in Canada involving a mother making and sharing pornographic pictures of her own children, and the judge questioned the message that sentence would send to the community.
Court heard the combined jail term and probation would keep the mother under supervision for five years compared to three years in a federal penitentiary.
“I know what I did was wrong and there's nothing I can do to change it. I know that God has forgiven me for what has happened and this is all part of his plan for me,” the mother, breaking down in tears, said before she was taken into custody on Wednesday.
She distributed photos of her twin toddler daughters in 2010 during an online relationship with a man from Smiths Falls, south of Ottawa, court heard.
She was caught doing the same with a Toronto man a year ago when Toronto Police Service's sex crimes unit intercepted instant messaging which contained highly “sexualized” language considered child pornography, said Crown attorney Paul Larsh.
