Luis Canelos was nine years old when he accidentally shot himself in the groin with his father's rifle.
The shot left the Peruvian boy with just part of his right testicle.
Now 17, Canelos has travelled from his remote village to Miami, Fla., for a long-awaited surgery to replace his penis.
"I want to recover my body, be young again," Canelos told the Miami Herald.
Canelos and his father, Roger, 41, arrived on July 16 with the help of the International Kids Fund Wonderfund that assists children around the world who can't access or afford medical treatment. The complex procedure, called phalloplasty, costs $50,000 and will be covered by private and public donations.
"I cannot overemphasize how complex the operation is," Dr. Rafael Gosalbez, who will perform the surgery with two other doctors, told the newspaper.
The teen's genitals will be replaced with both his forearm skin and a bone from a cadaver.
The surgery is scheduled for August at the Holtz Children's Hospital at the University of Miami.
