... it will make air travel safer, says ex-TSA head in plea to stop 'unending nightmare' of airport security

The former head of Transportation Security Administration has said that the country's airport security system is a broken mess making travelling ‘an unending nightmare’ for passengers.

Kip Hawley, who was head of the TSA from 2005-2009, has argued that the system would be more effective if it embraced more risk including allowing passengers to bring almost anything on board including knives, liquids and lighters.

Hawley criticises the current procedure for reducing airport security into an 'Easter-egg hunt' where TSA officers look out for low-risk prohibited items, such as lighters, rather than focusing on disrupting terror plots.

I'm with him on that. A few years ago while flying from Vancouver to Sandspit the guards took my first aid scissors from my fanny pack.On the return flight a2 weeks late they stole my tweezers that were ok to fly to Sandspit with. Go figure.

The 9/11 terrorists had Box Cutters, and now they want knives allowed on board planes.. NO!!!

You don't like the rules, drive.. or get a pilots license and fly yourself. (I'm joining pilot school this June)

If the other passengers had knives, the planes may have made it to their destination with a few wounded or dead.

Same reasoning behind gun laws in the USA... so let everyone have guns in Canada, their will be less crime as folks can defend themselves from criminals. ;)

The idea of armed marshals is probably an easier implemented one. But searching old grandmothers and banning their toothpaste isn't going to make the skies any safer. (Of course one can't actually racially profile and perhaps actually make it an inconvenience of those that actually look like prior terrorists. That would be just silly.)

Nah, just allow normal stuff on the plane but distribute switches and canisters of sleeping gas around the planes' passenger areas and any trouble brews up, just hit one of the switches that releases the gas. Nice quiet flight all the way to a waiting airport and security.

But racial profiling is not PC. Logic can not enter into the discussion.
