CBC bumps timeslot for racy show

By Kris Sims, Parliamentary Bureau

A screen grab of the French porn show "Hard".
OTTAWA - The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's French arm is tweaking its offering of a raunchy foreign show that has come under fire.

"In line with its policies and programs to ensure that the Hard series is not seen by children, Radio-Canada has decided to restrict the spread between midnight and 4 am (EST) today," reads a post, written in French, on Radio-Canada's Facebook page.

The state broadcaster said the racy show, produced in France, was purchased because it spoke to young adult audiences and was a hit in places like Germany and Korea.

The partial stand-down comes after a flood of criticism from the prime minister, MPs from all parties, and the heritage minister.

"This programming cannot be defended," Heritage Minister James Moore said after viewing the show, which runs Tou.tv, a web TV video on demand offered by Radio-Canada.

"Having now seen the show in question, it raises serious concerns about some programming decisions being made with taxpayers' dollars by CBC/Radio-Canada," he said.

"Today I contacted the CBC and asked them to review all of their online content to ensure offensive programming such as this is not repeated."

The Prime Minister's Office also issued a statement.

"This content is clearly adult in nature and should not be available to children," a PMO spokesman wrote in an e-mail. "While the government doesn't control CBC's content, we are confused by their decision to purchase sexually explicit content and make it available to children. The CBC's mandate is to deliver quality programming to the regions and rural areas, not this material."

The cost of obtaining Hard is not being disclosed by CBC, which cites the information as private due to competition.

Initially, CBC said Hard was not pornographic, and was rated 16-plus.

I've been hearing about this story for the last couple of days,
& have been wondering when it would finally pop up here.

The CBC isn't posting Porn, but other stations reporting on
this as a news story...have to darken out parts of the video
to keep the CRTC off their arse for showing (not?) porn
scenes. It is a weird one...

At least post some scenes so we can have a clear understanding of what Stevy thinks is raunchy. Geez!

I can sort'a see it if it was porn with a "Canadian" content to it, I guess,
but this is imported from France. Like I said earlier, it's a weird one.

Meh, porn or not I don't care. I'm against censorship and ratings systems.

I've not seen it so I don't know how truly 'pornographic' it is but with everything else that's shown in the middle of the day, I just can't get that riled up about it. Flip through the channels on a Saturday afternoon (I can recall catching a 12 noon broadcast of The Exorcist on A&E one day) or for that matter any daytime talk show.

Yeah it's weird that they seem to be going to the wall for it seeing as how it's an imported program. But whatever.

Like this is news the Canadian French channels always had soft porn on their French TV channels so going hard core is no big deal to the French but since there has been a all out ban of any type of porn in English Canada this is new to them so now it is a big deal.

You have struck on a major difference between French and English culture in Canada. French have an easy going attitude toward sex and the English are anal about it. Like Bill Maher said, the French are not a bunch of six year olds who giggle at the sight of pee pee parts.

Sun TV plays dirty with 'CBC porn'

According to Sun TV, CBC is producing "state broadcaster smut."

Heritage Minister James Moore, though, declined to take the bait.

"I know you're in the business of just going after the CBC, but I can't comment on something I haven't seen," he told a Sun TV reporter.

Then, off camera, he expressed skepticism about the issue, pointed out that Sun papers run bikini girls, and said the Sun TV reporter is being used as a "pawn" by Quebecor CEO Pierre Karl Peladeau, who wants CBC defunded so he can get a larger share of the French-language TV audience in Quebec, after which he will shut down Sun TV.

"You know that's going to happen right?" he said.

The Sun ran an editorial the next day calling on Prime Minister Stephen Harper to fire Moore, and Moore flip-flopped, calling on the CBC to review its online content.

This is all so silly I can hardly believe it.

If you actually watch a whole episode of Hard, as I have, you can't call it porn.

It is more explicit than Sex and the City - because the French have a higher tolerance for such things than Americans do - but the ratio of sexy bits to non-sexy bit is about the same. There is full-frontal nudity, but most of the show is made up of dramatic scenes, and the point of the whole thing is not sexual arousal.

Quebecor's Videotron, which runs a competing French-language web TV site, does offer hardcore pornography, including a channel called hardtv, which offers explicit gay sex 24-7, and another called Vanessa, which runs heterosexual porn produced by Pega Productions, in Montreal, featuring Canadian performers.

Sun TV's parent company sells a lot of porn. CBC does not sell porn. But somehow Sun TV is managing to get politicians to condemn CBC for selling porn.

It's zany!

I'm not quite sure what the big deal is. If people are really that concerned with keeping porn away from kids, maybe a good place to start would be the internet. I know my kids are more likely to surf the net than to watch French CBC between midnight and four.

What is really amusing is that people don't want the gov't to control what's on the CBC, except for when they do want the gov't to control what's on the CBC.

It's okay, because the Sun controls the government.

In regards to the "easy going attitude" of French Canada compared to English Canada, not entirely true. 7 or 8 years ago, or so, swingers clubs in Montreal were being raided, owners charged, and shut down like crazy where as swingers clubs out here were not.

Even then. Why not? Sex sells. Nice way to get revenue from advertisers.

I pay taxes and dont watch the CBC but am fine with it.

And good luck on that one. Kids have always found ways to get porn. If they want it they'll get it. Particularly these days. Even if a parent manages to block everything online, the kid has friends.

Agreed. Attitudes towards sex are way too puritanical in North America in general. Which is weird as its everywhere in movies and advertising. You'd think people would get used to it and move on.

One of my favorite jokes:
A Frenchman is walking down the beach when he comes upon a woman's body washed up on shore. He runs off to get the police. When he gets back, his friend Pierre is humping the woman's body. He yells, "Pierre, stop dat!"
"Pourquio?" asks Pierre.
Bien, She's dead!"
"Oh, Tabernac! I tot she was English!"

If it's just about money, then what sets the CBC apart from the rest? Then it's time to privatize the CBC, or at least stop subsidizing it.

Perhaps. If we're going to pay for a channel with tax dollars we should be able to watch it without annoying commercials.

How can that be any worse than what is shown on Showcase?

I think the issue ties back to "Canadian Content" in exchange for the Billion
plus dollar subsidy the CBC receives yearly. The servicing the North and
far flung communities thing (I think, but am not sure) is a dead issue now
that analog TV has passed (can anyone still receive TV signals with a set
of rabbit ears now, or do they have to be with a cable or sattalite provider).

If that's so, that leaves a billion dollar annual subsity for radio, and for a
website. Maybe I'm wrong, but just try'n to boil the arguement down to its
basics for the sake of direction in the Thread.

I doubt that showcase is receiving government money to show what it does.
That might be the difference....and maybe it's something else.

FFS, I leave the country and right away you guys start bringing in porn on the TV.... WTF?

Oh well, there's enough boobies and such on Aussie Free-to-air TV..... maybe not as much as Showcase, but that's what the internet's for anyways.

..... Those Japanese and Germans are a crazy bunch.... we're all Doomed if the Newfies start.
