OTTAWA - A new Justice Department study suggests a significant number of men released on bail after allegedly beating up their partners return home to beat them up again.
The research also indicates that men with violent criminal histories are twice as likely to violate bail conditions, and to again harass or assault their wives or partners.
A women's shelter advocate says the study shows that bail is too readily granted to some wife-assaulters, and says more accused men need to wear electronic tracking devices while back out on the street.
The findings are contained in an unpublished internal brief that is part of a larger Justice Department project to examine Canada's bail regime.
A draft copy of the study, dated November last year and stamped "not for public distribution," was obtained by The Canadian Press under the Access to Information Act.
"Violent offences involving an intimate partner present a unique challenge as victims often …

It's been my misfortune to know a few of them. The one's I've known serve their time, and batter again. Jail is just treating the symptom. Dunno if there's a cure or not.

That said, one fella used to beat his wife when he got drunk. He went to AA for years, and quit battering...............so there might be a connection..................no **** Sherlock......I believe drugs and booze turn loose Mr. Hyde more often than not.

Fines and jail never touched him. Getting off the booze was pretty much the only way he turned himself around. He was a barber, and no way would he ever get scissors or a razor near me....

This CANNOT be surprising to anyone. It's the cycle of abuse. Of course they do it again. That the Justice Dept. has studied it and came to that same conclusion and yet have not taken measures to change bail conditions is a disgrace. They should be ashamed.

Why does your headline say that this is women batterers, but the article is about men?

Ha Ha. While there are indeed some women batterers out there, the vast majority are men.

Why did they even need a 'new study' to determine this? Perhaps they should be doing a study on what sort of 'corrective steps' led to the highest percentage of eliminating future repeats, be it AA, anger management, or whatever programs are there. For the record the victim should also be taking those very same 'courses' as a preventive measure in that recognition of the 'warning signs' might be enough to get them to leave before the attacks take place.

You have fallen victim to a common fallacy on violence.

It is not just women who are the victims of spousal violence - Canada - CBC News

According to a large-scale Statistics Canada study in 2005, the likelihood of a man being the victim of violent abuse by his female partner is almost the same as it is for a woman.

Surprise surprise. Can the bureaucracy think up more useless ways to squander money than this? Has much to do with the catch & release joke of a justice system we have. Bring back public flogging and stocks in the city square and watch the repeat rate go down.
