The future of the Keystone pipeline.

TransCanada’s controversial Keystone pipeline, which if completed would ship oil more than 1,700 miles from Alberta to Gulf Coast refineries, has faced intense criticism from environmentalists and landowners. It's also created a deep rupture between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the State Department., which is in charge of reviewing the project.
Russell Girling, President and CEO of TransCanada, tells BNN he is confident the project will be approved.

“The project makes economic sense for both Canada and the United States…it creates jobs, provides energy security and at the end of the day has positive impacts for the environment relative to the alternatives to importing oil into the United States,” he says.

Girling believes opponenents of the pipeline have a much bigger bone to pick: the Canadian oil sands.

“The real issue here is those opposed to the Canadian oil sands believe that by delaying or denying this permit somehow they will slowdown the development of Canadian oil sands,” he says. “That’s an unrealistic expectation—the Canadian oil sands will get developed, irrespective of this pipeline.”

The US has a big decision to make. Not only does the opportunity exist fro the oil sands to export to Asia via the West coast ports, but there are plans for 3 LNG facilities out there as well.

It's very much in Canada's best interests to service these markets as it will create a more competitive landscape for the resource, but in doing so, it may have a big impact on the cost of fueling the US economy.

Yeah, South Korea is building an LNG port in the Mackenzie Delta. Where are the EPA cries about that?

Heavy crude can make far more products than Brent or West Texas Intermediate.

Medical products alone make heavy crude far more valuable than easy to refine Saudi oil.

Perhaps a valium shortage would trigger a far more sane reaction?

Did they bitch when the first Keystone line was completed to Chicago or rejoice when prices dropped?

The US Air Force has been flying on Canadian heavy oil for decades yet I hear no complaints about that.

Sign away the rights to your land, or the company will take you to court to start the eminent domain process. Landowners, NGO's, Democrats, and Republicans are fighting this in Nebraska. The proposed pipeline runs over top an aquifer that supplies 83% of the irrigated cropland in Nebraska, and 78% of the States public water supply.

The leaks in Keystone 1, such as the 20,000 gallon "leak" in North Dakota, don't help TransCanada's case.

So why are they not screaming bloody murder over the drilling the east side of the rockies which is one of the largest aquifers in the entire US which the entire city of Denver relies on?

Who funded Keystone 1 and what was it before it was an oil pipline?

Not in their backyard, would be my guess.

And that is why they got the green light. Those who have the line run under their property will be paid a yearly right of way fee and a hefty check for any crop losses during contruction. It's not some eminient domain bull**** issue. They get paid and get paid well. They probably just want more.
