Wills and Kate have raised over £1 million for charity from their wedding.

Before they wed the couple stipulated that guests were not to give them wedding gifts but instead make donations to charity.

In so doing, they have raised £1,058,367 which will go to 26 different charitable groups hand-picked by the couple ahead of their nuptials.

The organisations support causes the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge feel strongly about, including arts and sports groups and projects designed to help children fulfil their potential.

Some of those included are based in Canada, Australia and New Zealand, countries William has visited in the past.

Among the charities set to benefit is the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary.

A St James's Palace spokesman said: "The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted that these charities are able to benefit so positively from their special day."

The charitable fund created by Prince William and Kate Middleton in place of a wedding gift wish-list has raised more than £1m.

The pair expressed their gratitude for the money donated

Clarence House said the total donated of £1,058,367 will go to 26 different groups hand-picked by the couple ahead of their nuptials.

The pair set up the fund for well-wishers to contribute cash instead of buying wedding presents.

Some of those included are based in Canada, Australia and New Zealand, countries William has visited in the past.

Among the charities set to benefit is the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary.

During their forthcoming tour of North America the Duke will meet members of Prince Edward Island's Search and Rescue team.

The majority of donations were made through the Royal Wedding Charitable Gift Fund website.

Contributions were also made via revenue from wedding-related projects.

Those included a donation by Decca Records from sales of the official Royal Wedding Album and a donation by Mario Testino's office from sales of the photograph of the couple printed in the official wedding brochure.

A St James's Palace spokesman said: "The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted that these charities are able to benefit so positively from their special day.

"They would like to thank everyone who donated and contributed so generously to the charitable fund and for all the kindness and support shown to them throughout the wedding period."

The Palace said £559,104 was donated by members of the public and wedding guests, while £252,263 was paid directly to the 26 charities.

A total of £247,000 was generated from rights due to The Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry that the Trustees allocated to the Gift Fund.
