George Stroumboulopoulos says he is "heartbroken" by the death of a "dear friend" whose body was found in his Los Angeles rental home.
Los Angeles police told the New York Daily News they found Canadian actor Richard Hong, 41, beaten to death after responding to a robbery call at Stroumboulopoulos' home in West Hollywood after 2 a.m. Friday morning.
Hong had died from "severe head trauma," ABC7 reports.
In a statement released on Facebook, Stroumboulopoulos said Hong had been staying at the home while the CanadianTV host was in New York and that his death was likely the result of a break-in.
"There's so much to say but I'm at a loss for words," he added, "so just love your people and I will have more to say when we know more about what happened."
Witnesses said an assailant in a black jacket was seen fleeing the area, investigators told ABC7.
Stroumboulopoulos says he is returning to Los Angeles to mourn with his other friends.
Stroumboulopoulos became the host of Hockey Night in Canada in 2014 after Rogers Media acquired the NHL rights in a 12-year, $5.2-billion deal, but left earlier this year to “to explore new creative opportunities.”
Internet database IMDB lists five acting credits for Hong, including Golf Cart Driving School, Tied Up, Big Urban Myth Show, an uncredited role on ER back in 2002 and the movie Perception, currently in post-production.
Stroumboulopoulos won numerous Gemini awards as a CBC host and had a short-lived talk show on CNN before moving to Hockey Night in Canada.

Detectives have arrested the man they suspect murdered one of George Stroumboulopoulos’ best buddies at his Hollywood Hills home.
Cops say the suspect -- believed to be in his early 20s -- has a history of violence. Investigators zeroed in on the man because of evidence found at the scene.
Richard Hong, 41 — a fellow Canadian — had been staying at the former Hockey Night in Canada`s California apartment when he was killed Sept. 23.
“It is the result of evidence obtained that the suspect left at scene,” Palka said. “It is the result of cameras that the community had,” LAPD Capt. Cory Palka told reporters.
“They were able to track him down and make an arrest ... He does have a criminal history. He has a couple of violent crimes that he’s been arrested for.”
