Henry Cavill’s Superman is set to get another standalone film as the sequel to Man Of Steel is reportedly in the early stages of development.
The character was killed off at the end of his last cinematic outing, March’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but will still appear in Warner Bros. forthcoming superhero team-up blockbuster Justice League, released next year.
Bosses at the studio have been silent on whether there will be a follow-up to Man of Steel, the 2013 Superman movie which was the first in a planned series using characters from DC Comics.
The silence on Superman’s return comes despite announcements that less famous DC superheroes such as The Flash, Aquaman, Cyborg and Wonder Woman will get their own movies.
Editors at TheWrap.com report that contrary to Warner Bros. executives’ lack of public pronouncements a second standalone Superman film is on its way, with a studio insider telling the U.S. website the project is a top priority and producers are desperate for it to be a success.
Despite racking up huge box office takings, the two previous films in the studios’ DC Extended Universe (DCEU) franchise, Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad, have been mauled by critics.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, studio executives were so rattled by the poor response to Batman v Superman that they ordered alterations to Suicide Squad, which despite critical derision smashed the North American box office record for a movie opening in August by earning $135 million in its debut weekend.
