30 dolphins trapped in ice off Newfoundland

All but three of the 30 or so dolphins trapped in the ice off the coast of southwestern Newfoundland over the weekend have died.
"The remaining dolphins appear to be in extremely poor condition. Current weather conditions of high winds and whiteouts in the area are not helping matters," Department of Fisheries and Oceans spokesman Larry Vaters said in a statement.
"The cause of death is likely the result of internal body injuries caused by ice pressure and/or suffocation from ice cover."
Cape Ray resident Bert Osmond posted pictures and videos of the animals struggling against the ice in the shallow, blood-filled water on his Facebook page over the weekend, lamenting "there is no way to help them" because "it's nothing but ice for miles."
Vaters said this is just something that happens sometimes in Newfoundland and cautioned against anyone putting themselves at risk to rescue the dolphins.
