You're in a restaurant with a group of friends and one person eats twice as much as everyone else. When the bill comes, he says, "Right, let's split it."

...Id let it go this time but the next time, hmmm?

the true scrounger wouldn't say "let's split it" he'd let someone else say that, or insinuate it in some way, without drawing attention

I think you have some doggy friends someone like this i would not call my friend.!!! or invite them to dinner!!!Why did you not just say no!!!you obviously eat more than the rest and decided that this is how you would over come paying for it.Sometimes it is best not to be polite with people who take advantage of your generosity

When the bill comes add up what you had, and put the money on the table(including tip). I'm not going to pay for anyone unless I offered to buy them Dinner.

I'd laugh softly, go to the bathroom and leave telling the staff my good friend was paying. Hope they like doing dishes.

Yeah, we only go to really cheap places. It's for the ambiance and genuineness you understand not because my friend has a physical difficulty in reaching the bottom of his pockets and lifting out cash renumeration when asked....

I'd have to wonder why I'd gone for supper with them in the first place if I liked them so little that I was spending my time worrying about what they ate, and how to split the bill. It seems there's a dodgy friend in the mix there somewhere, and I'm not sure it's the one suggesting the tab be split.

I'd just pay and get him back next time.

I have one friend who likes to play "let the waitress randonly pick a credit card off the table". That's fun in a group of 3 or 4.

I'd let it go once or twice, but after that, I'd do either of two things: if I could order my meal after them, I'd order something that cost twice as much as theirs, and then split the bill, or, when they suggested splitting the bill, I'd just say, 'no, not this time, it never seems to work out properly'.

You can skate around this as well by being the only person who either does or does not order alcohol, that sometimes helps unsplit the bill.

I know a guy who once told a group we were in that he had to be careful because sometimes once all the money was thrown in and change divided up that he often left with more money than he came with.

We all watched him carefully!

Are you saying that they can order anything on the menu and assume others will subsidize their meal? To me, that's just rude. If we all have roughly the same meals and drinks (cost wise)I don't have a problem with splitting the tab, but if I'm not drinking and have a house salad as opposed to another who has appetizers, a meal, desert, all manner of likker.. well forget it.

No, I'm not saying that it's okay. I'm saying that it's kind of trivial though. And if the trivial things are picking at you so much, then there's probably a reason they are. Either you don't care a lot for the person, or you went out for dinner when you probably didn't have the budget to do so, or, or, or.... I'd sit down for a hard look at that reason.
