The few hundred unemployed workers who would fill those jobs perhaps?

We just got back from a Walmart Supercentre and we estimate we saved $50 on groceries compared to if we had shopped at Superstore.

I am glad to have Walmart around.

Nonsense. Wal-Mart helps Wal-Mart and it helps China sell their junk. Workers need a job with a future. Wal-Mart employs more minimum wage and part-time people than any other company in the world and the employee turnover rate is disgusting.

Yuan I agree with you in principle, but I am very confused over this delemma, as,
I do shop in our Walmart from time to time, and the employees and staff are very
friendly and polite and helpful.
People will always shop where they stretch their dollar as far as it will go. I don't buy
junk, but I do buy items that are 'nice' and 'shoes' that are nice and 'food' that is cheaper.
I'm no different than the average joe. We are not wealthy. It's hard to turn away from
shopping there, as, at the end of the month, the saving is noticeable. We buy all of our
prescription drugs, my husband bought his prescription glasses there, saved about $200.00. Nice quality, with guarantee.
'Made in China' is EVERYWHERE. What can anyone do about it. And soon, it seems, their
automobiles will be here as well.
They tried to block walmart from being built here as well, but it didn't work, it finally came, and many love it, (and some hate it),and many stores are built close by to support it, and take
advantage of the crowds, for their own business.
In some ways, it has helped, as some local business are too expensive, with not enough
competition, and people who want the 'high end' merchandise will go elsewhere.
Many live from hand to mouth, and any saving they can make is important for them.

Wal-Mart is a starter job for many people juan. It's a leg up, a starting point. It's not the faceless evil corporation to work for (in Canada anyway... I can't speak for the US) that many make it out to be. They treated me well, I had awesome medical coverage, got good discounts. I paid all our bills and put away into savings from what I made there. I even had stock options. It was a bustling center, and yes, their turnover rate was high despite their best efforts, because people use it as a stepping stone. For people straight out of highschool, women returning to the workforce, seniors wanting a little extra money, it was an awesome place to work, and a great way to build a resume. They'll hire people who need the shot, people that the smaller stores won't hire BECAUSE they're longterm positions and they won't take anyone without a glowing resume.

They're not all good... few huge retail places are... but they aren't evil either.

I say again Karrie, Wal-Mart is an amoeba. Every time they open a new store a dozen smaller stores go out of business. According to their record in the U.S., when they have the market captured, they raise their prices back up. When Wal-Mart first came to Canada there were letters to the editor from Americans in many Canadian newspapers warning us not to let them in. I wish we hadn't.

The prices didn't go back up, their prices are very reasonable, and stay that way.
Many of those smaller stores afre too expensive, and take advantage of the customer,
so, they aren't so innocent.

In my town that is exactly what Wal-Mart did, they put Zellers and a dozen other stores under and then raised prices.

I hate to be a WalMart booster, but: Locally:

Walmart gave Zellers and Canadian Tire the opportunity they needed to give themselves a boot in the ass and realize that they were there to serve the customer; not the other way around.

As a result, Canadian Tire did a huge expansion, and you can now get some assistance, most of the time, when you need it. Zellers became nicer to deal with. They had gotten way "above it all" for a bit.

Wal Mart provided and provides employment, usually to two income households, and many of the folks I see working there, were there when the store opened. Some use it as a springboard, experience, and all that. Usually the turnover one sees there are students passing through.

Friends work there, and they say they like it. Flexible hours.

Our downtown core is not vacant, no more vacant than it was before Walmart, and it has been several years since they opened. Matter of fact, one new hardware store opened up just on the edge of the swamp, and a town not too far away has a new big box store.

I don't think we can fault WalMart for using products from China, made there because other companies have decided to offshore thereby decimating the North American manufacturing industry.

Maybe, in the long run, the sky will fall, chickens will come home to roost, frogs will rain from the heavens, a stitch in time will save nine, and the whole world will be boarded up. Wish I was a freakin genius so I could tell Harpo and the boys what to do to save everybody.

Oh, yes. Walmart, locally, doesn't have any fresh produce..........THE BASTARDS!!!

I'm probably missing the "big picture"..........hoonose!

You can't stop Wal-Mart. Sure you may have stopped them in your town but they will find a place close by and that town will reap the benefits. Then many people from your town will shop there...and EEE-GADS...some will work there.

Wal-Mart WILL be in your area. You have a temporary victory and that is all.
