A blistering hot ghost pepper (external - login to view) blew a hole in a man’s esophagus in a case that has shocked the medical community.
According to Newser quoting the Journal of Emergency Medicine (external - login to view), the perilous pepper nearly killed the man.
The 47-year-old American was mowing down a burger topped with what was referred to as a “ghost pepper puree” as part of a burger-eating contest.
Whoops! The pepper is one of the hottest on the planet and has a Scoville rating topping 1 million, meaning it should only be eaten in minute quantities.
But the rogue pepper was no joke for the man as he began puking profusely until it tore a hole in his esophagus (external - login to view).
The affliction is called Boerhaave syndrome (external - login to view) and can be fatal.
Doctors quickly diagnosed the tear but the man spent more than 23 days in hospital.
