Chicago has its deep dish pizza. Philadelphia has the Philly Cheesesteak. For Hogtown, it is back bacon on a bun.

Toronto Mayor John Tory unveiled the peameal bacon sandwich as Toronto’s signature dish during the Lovin’ Local Food Fest in Yonge-Dundas Square on Saturday.

Tory called it a form of grub that is not only “very Canadian,” but “very Toronto.”

“It’s very Canadian, not necessarily everybody’s taste, but very Toronto,” he told the crowd.

Jim Baxter, the director of the City of Toronto’s environment and energy division, noted the role of back bacon in Toronto’s gastronomic backstory.

“Toronto forever has been called Hogtown,” said Baxter. “It goes back to the days when there were a lot of pork producers here. Peameal bacon was ... developed in ... Toronto, and I think it is a very appropriate dish for Toronto.”

Among those who hit Saturday’s festival for a lunchtime bite was singer-songwriter Moe Berg, frontman for the Canadian power-pop group The Pursuit of Happiness.

He, too, called the choice of peameal bacon a “fitting” one.

“It’s not exactly high cuisine for such a sophisticated city, but ... we are Hogtown. And bacon is a very trendy thing right now, and Toronto is kind of a trendy city, so maybe it is actually fitting,” said Berg, who attended the annual event with his wife, Laura, and kids, Hartford, 6, and Fireese, 10.

The other nominees for Toronto’s signature dish were street-vendor hotdogs and sausages, the Jamaican patty, and the burrito.

Saturday’s Lovin’ Local Food Fest featured some of the city’s best eats, including samosas in tamarind sauce, gourmet corn dogs, cauliflower falafels and burnt marshmallow ice cream.

“Toronto forever has been called Hogtown,” said Baxter. “It goes back to the days when all of the Provincial tax revenues started ending up, here”
