hello everyone! i am going to be an immigrant to canada. if i come by boat, i'll be a boat person escaping from cincinnati, ohio; me, four cats and an itty bitty dog. of course, i'll be asking lots of questions. surely there is some place in all of canada for a graying hippy.

The BC Gulf Islands are full of greying American hippies. Probably a ton of Vietnam draft dodgers too. We like them all.

Hello, izzy... beautiful name... easy to pronounce and easy to remember!

Welcome to the great white North!!

There is too much rainy weather on the West-Coast, forget that! You'd be much better off here in Southern Ontario!
If it wasn't for the FOUR cats, I'd say move in with me, even if I'm not a hippy!!

actually, my name is elizabeth. the 4 boys are neutered and declawed--wonderful house pets. the onterio area reminds me too much of new york. i only seem to meet other americans when i visit. that's not good. if i am going to escape, i want to be gone--real gone.
what i am looking for is town and country...a little more country than town. not too hard on the wallet, fresh air, friendly live- and- let live types of people. a reasonable social worker's position within 10-15 miles or so; a good sized garden patch, cable/internet; a tall handsome hairy farmer who will eat my cooking and laugh at my jokes. i need a porch for morning coffee and evening classical guitar diddlings. am i asking/looking for too much? any one recognize my eutopia?

Hi Elizabeth;
I understand your needs and Southern Ontario wouldn't suit. How about southern Alberta? The Crow's Nest Area? Very laid back, small towns, surrounded by beautiful Mountains. I've been there a few times visiting.

Hi Elizabeth - I would recommend the interior of BC or the Kootenays.

Anywhere you live in B.C. is beautiful, just depends what you are looking for weatherwise. Lowermainland, vancouver island, very moderate, some rain, a little snow,
beautiful summers, not too hot, the interior is too hot in the summer for me, and too cold in the winter, and very dry, but lots of snow in the winter,
and the further you go north, the colder. It's depends what you want.
I love it by the ocean, can't beat those breezes in the summer.

Welcome Izzy:

Sounds like West Virginia is what you're after.

If you only meet Americans in Ont., you're in the wrong section. We've lived here all our lives, and Americans are few and far between in our little section of swamp. (near the US border, and close to Ottawa) The folks are correct when they say that a lot of Americans prefer the West Coast weather......not too much snow.

Would strongly recommend the overland route, as the canals might be a tad frozen. Bring Dr. Johnny Fever and your guitar, and you'll fit right in.

You want a social worker within 10 miles, or you want a job as one, with a ten mile commute? Both sound reasonable and typically Canadian. We need more social workers; especially ones with no local knowledge. They fit right in also. Why would we hire Canadian grads when there are qualified Americans knocking? Foolish, right?

Applying macro socio-psychology to small town milieu will get one accepted in the "right" circles most immediately, a membership to the golf club, and the curling society, where one can discuss the problems facing.........."them",(your clients), and, the in-track for real estate with porches for coffee, etc.

We are short on tall hairy farmers however, since the family farm is going the way of the dodo, being replaced by mega-ag businesses. You might have to advertise for this. If you had hit the West coast, there was a real nice pig farmer there up until a few months ago who liked most women he met. Willy Picton will not be available for a bit though. Heard of him? Probably a few more out there. Who knows!

Anyway, a future welcome to Canada. Hope you like it. If I can be of any assistance whatsoever, just post here. Bring warm clothes, especially if you come in July. Our summers can be a bugger. Nice lumberjack shirts are usually the desired American accouterments.

Good to meet you.

nuggler: i don't know if you're being sarcastic, musing out loud or just don't want to see anymore americans on your landscape. further, there is more than one type of social worker; especially if the area of specialty has little to do with culture as much as with diseases. do most of canada's social workers sign--as in sign language, speak spanish; are cerified in domestic violence counseling, recognizing child abuse and addictions counseling? i don't want to add to the glut of specailists.
i'm just tired of here and the way things are done.
why would you suggest west virginia? that is a crazy but pretty place. are hog farmers in canada backwards people? not with the quantity of pork consumed there. somebody has the sense to make money.
with what i detect of your disposition and knowledge of all things canadian, you'd be the perfect person to ask about the racial climate there. is it as poor and tacky, stereotypical and godless as it is here in cincinnati, ohio? how do american women of colour fare there? you know, the educated, middle-aged, drug and alcohol free, clean criminal record, no welfare or illegitimate children, middle income baptist? or would you know?
what was it that provoked your....? i have another question for you--someone wrote back referring to canada as the great white north...tell me what the 'white' implies. tell me that the writer was referring to snow.
nuggler, i appreciate anyone who honestly speaks his mind/heart. your word usage towards a complete stranger leaves me curious. was it the evening guitar on the porch? i didn't say pickin' an grinnin' i said classical. would it help if i told you i am very partial to french roast coffee? at any rate, you said you'd be of assistance, i'm sure i can count on you for the skinny on canada....and hey, i'm not taking...i'm bringing. i like you anyway--regardless of your politics.

Hi Elizabeth..and welcome

The "Great White North" is a reference to our major season...winter... because all of Canada experiences a good deal of winter (long months of snow and frequently verrrry cold) we make light of our wintry landscape. Canada is the best place in the world to live hands down! Yes we still have growing pains as a youngish nation and it's tough living next door to the American machine..... But Canadians can be generous and thoughtful in their attitudes and demeanor while ambivalent and somewhat confused about their "national identity".... I live in Ontario and would only recommend this province to someone who wants to be a part of the rat-race...get-ahead regardless of who you step on....pro-business pro-American crowd. Rural Ontario is nice and if you're careful to select a local community that gets its water from a confined aquifer (not run-off from ag-biz or industry) like a mixed topography, some areas are flat while others are significantly rolling, prefer things quiet and simple, there are some nice areas. Like most places on the planet, much of your experience will be defined by what you bring to this country in terms of personal likes and dislikes. Hope you find a setting you can call your home. Welcome!

Don't listen to the tall tales of our weather Here in the Maritimes, our winters compare favourably to what you have faced in your own state.Glad you want to make our nation your new home
