I have written a little sympathy and some jokes on your pages already, having recieved some encouraging replies, for which I send my grateful thanks. I cannot say all of the topics/items are of my choice, but at least these pages give you "freedom". One of the people replying to my postings has said I have a sense of humour, this is probably due to my meeting of many people as a heating engineer (and probably taught me to help others when they most need it) Please forgive me for mentioning my pages www.gardeningforyou.com and NO!! I do not sell anything, they are pages to help gardeners with a little humour thrown in, for those of you who visit, I am in the middle of writing about BEANS, when I arrive at Harricot beans, Having so much "info" it will be (I hope) my best humour yet. I suppose I spent most of my time "sorting" for pages and writing on many gardening forums, so to break away onto Canadian Content does prove a break. If you do have points or questions on gardening I do have a contct page on my site. I would say (at the moment) that I am privileged to become part of what appears to be fun. If you want a peek at some of my pages you will find some of my stories, like the one at the bottom of Meanings of Flowers (roses) or jokes (once again at the bottom) of cherries or Aubergines. once again my thanks for your appreciation. FRED

Welcome to Canadian Content, boiler! Usually I'm not the first one available as part of the unofficial welcoming committee, but saw your posts immediately and was quite amused

Anyways, welcome!

Hi Fred! Welcome aboard. I don't think we have a gardening person on here...at least I havent seen anything garden related. Are you good with indoor plants as well? I do ok with roses on my balcony, but inside the only plants I can manage are plastic ones.

Welcome Boiler. I wondered about that name and at first thought maybe it refered to a body part. But due to your career, it now makes perfect sense. There are a few gardeners here. Myself included.

Itype this under the quick reply and find that you two have crept in (just cos I'm a slow tie pist. So to triedit yes I am reasonably good with indoor plants, )I try not to be as my window cills are littered with plants courtesy of my wife) if you take a peek at my site you will see how long my index on the left side really is, and sorry I have not arrived at indoor plants yet ( ileave you with the problem to sort out how many more subjects I have yet to add from aspidestras to Zinnias. eh1eh, lovely shot of the pool and yes my name was taken from my trade (52 years of it) and still doing the odd bits, gives me something to do in my "spare" time.

I have to say.... rarely boiler, when we encourage someone to give us an intro thread, do we get much more than 'hi, I'm ____'. I was tickled pink to sign back in and find your wonderfully thought out post.

I look forward to picking your brain on my upcoming projects. Once I manage to convince my husband to stop tearing up my yard, I hope to plant some things in it!! lol.

I am accused by nuggler on anothr posting of making value judgements (which I did not) but seeing all the greetings from you all, I feel I must do it now:- you lot out there over the pond and elsewhere appear to be the most welcoming cheery people I have come across as a group, karrie! how can you be getting on with your acreage if you are going to friends for xmas?? not to worry though I am sharpening my lawn mower ready for you. Advice costs nothing, but friendship becomes widespread. Sincere thanks to all of you for your greetings. I am sorry if I have altered the course of the greetings page, but I was always tught to use the word "thankyou" THANKYOU.

lol.... no way to do any yard work over Christmas here boiler. And we haven't taken holiday all summer because of our renovations, so, we figure we'll get a couple projects done before then, and enjoy two weeks off with family. I'll be starting to order from seed catalogues as soon as I get back though I suspect. lol.

Come on karrie, at least think about it! But I must admit relatives and friends are always a good tonic. hermite get away from your PC if you make a greeting you will find all them nice people out there want to say hi. But thanks for your remarks on the pages, I am a slow writer and make misspellings so have to correct a lot, as you will see I am in the middle of writing beans, so look out for my pages (to come) on harricot beans, it should be a BLAST, yes the pun is intentional

Hi and Welcome! An extra green thumb is always a nice splash of colour to an otherwise monochromatic screen. Let me tell you what I have in the works.

I have a fish tank that I am going to change from a fairly mundane aquarium to what is called a River Tank. I'm using a 120 gallon 72"x24"x18" tank on a stand. The water feature runs the length of the tank which is split from front to back with a retainer wall, sealed water tight. This leaves roughly, the front half of the tank, half way filled with water to approximately 30 gallons. 72"x12"x12".

This forms the river part, with the remaining tank area in the back providing the bank area for indoor plants, and herbs. Roughly the same dimensions as the water portion. I'll be using a 400 watt metal halide light with a reflector, which should dump me way over the 50 watts per sq foot margin.

Delivery of the water cycle will be via a small curved water fall into the front of the tank from the left side. I hope to get an even spread to drop the water down in a veil rather than a stream. As it moves through the tank, I want to narrow a small section to speed up the flow and then widen the terminus to reduce the rate of flow and create a small back eddy of calmer water. To help with this, I will use water plants, and just before the water intake, I want to plant some grass to help trap larger pieces before the get to the intakes.

The water than passes from the intakes to the first filter, a canister with large ditrus removal media, then onto a second canister with charcoal to remove chemicals and a micron filter for water polishing. Lastly a UV light to remove any bacteria, cysts and algae. Then pumped out through the water fall to continue the cycle.

As a reduction of nitrate device, I want to incorporate a diversion in the feed to the filters to pump tank water rich in nitrates to the plant bed. This will be accomplished by adding a two way valve before the first filter that runs straight to 4 bio-wheels that should create a spray of water droplets over the entire bed with an expected spray pattern of 18" each. Much like foliar feeding, this can be set to a timer for twice a day.

I've got a love for cooking as well and so I want to plant some herbs in my river tank to harvest as needed. The basics, basil, oregano, rosemary, dill, marjoram, parsley that sort of thing, also a few colourful plants. I've got a couple of orchids blooming at the moment and so I think I would like to incorporate a couple of those into the bed as well.

Thoughts?
