Hey all,
I'm from Illinois and I'm 17 years old. I'm really into politics and I love learning new languages. (currently studying german in my spare time) I was searching for things about Canada after Kerry lost. I'm a fan of socialism to a degree and Canada has socialized medical care and things like that. I really enjoy learning about new cultures and Canada seems a lot more interesting than here and I actually enjoy winter.
I don't know if I would ever move to Canada as I would be away from my family but I guess it isn't as far away as some states. I'm researching Canada and I love how low the crime rate is and how tolerent you are of others. (although you seem to really hate americans by my read through of your boards. ) One of these days I'm going to visit Canada to see first hand what it's like. Until then, I'm going to hang around here now and then to interact with some Canadians.

Hey Jer,

Well, as you can see, we're [most of us] a pretty friendly croud here. Don't get me wrong, there are some Canadians that dislike Americans to a degree, but most of us a just really unhappy with the current administration and the choices of some Americans to side with them. That's all it is.

I hope you can make yourself comfortable here, we're very welcoming of Americans who appreciate us.

It's true, Jeremy. It isn't a dislike of Americans so much as a dislike for the madness shown in reelecting Bush.

My husband is American (now a dual citizen), and so is my daughter. The only time I ever really can't stand Americans is when my husband and I are fighting. And even then, it isn't serious, it's just a passing thing.

Oh, and welcome, by the way.

Hey Haggis,
If you aren't busy could you show me where I could get information on obtaining dual citizenship? I've found things on becoming a full citizen but not dual. That would be ideal for me. Thanks.

Hi Jeremy,

What's up over there in Illinois?
I'm from Germany - after I had read that you're learning German, I thought I should tell you *hehe* So if there's something you want to know about German, just let me know...

Continental Europe btw is against Bush, too - but I don't know anyone who 'hates' the Americans. We still like the country and also the people, what we do not like is Bush being president... that's it So don't worry if speaking to someone from Europe *hehe* - I don't think that many people like Germans though, still a relict from WW2 but that's something I have to live with I'm afraid... anyway, hope to hear from you, tschau!

Done deal, Pemmican.

For general reference, becoming Canadian does not mean surrendering your American citizenship, you become a dual citizen of both countries. In some countries, however, obtaining citizenship for another country does mean surrendering the first (this was true of the US until relatively recently).

You must be a legal permanent resident of Canada for three years before you can apply for citizenship (as far as I know, this is still the time-frame).

Thank you, Haggis,

I'm not an American, I'm German - it's the almost same here I guess with dual citizenship or even triple citizenship , I was interested though in the way it's handled in Canada - and who knows, maybe I'll be a Canadian, too some time *hehe*

Oh, I knew you were German, that's why I mentioned the possible problem with that (did you get my PM?). I think Canada would be richer for having you, by the way.

hey jer,
i'm an american, here in canada (married a canuckle-head) and i'm going for permanent resident. i don't get to vote but pretty much anything else and i get to keep my rights as a us citizen. i can say that i find canadians to be a bit harsh on us americans. my brother in law is really rough on me. at first you'll get taunted for not knowing what snow pants are, or why the sign in the park has a teepee w/ an X over it and you ask why it reads "no indians" -apparently it's no CAMPING
i'm from florida...so all of this is foreign to me..in fact i hadn't even seen snow until last january. but once the initial teasing is over with...i'd say a good 6 months, they lighten up on you and enjoy your company. oh yeah and they won't let you call coke anything but pop and they say Zed instead of "Zee" for the letter Z. weird huh? oh yeah and you'll get tons of laughs out of how many say EH? and Aboot (about). he he he

We need smart young people who are drawn to the 'frontier' life here in North America! And hey, the mere fact that you want to be in Canada makes you smart. It's kind of like an IQ test, and you scored high. 8-)

Is this really true?
The Americans make fun of the Canadian "eh" in almost all US-sitcoms where Canada is mentioned...
I can remember an episode of "King of Queens" where Doug gets to know he was born in Canada. Being shocked he said to his dad: You mean I'm a Canadian? What if I wanted to become president, ehh??? (something that way).
Do Canadians really use this "eh" a lot?

I think it might be more of a regional thing, Pemmican. I don't hear it much around BC but I've heard that it is said a lot more often in Toronto as well as the east coast. Oddly enough, 'eh' is also a relatively common expression in northeastern US.

If there be Americans around, though, you will often see Canadians whipping out their 'eh's like gunslingers at a shoot-out.
