Good story! and I know what you mean about certain words just appealing, somehow. I love the word 'dilapidated', and as the years go by, I even get to use it to describe myself.

I like that word, too - and I got to know it recently actually - and again something Canadian is involved, weird, huh?!:

Some months ago, the Canadian band "The Paperboys" were playing here in Germany, it was a very good concert, the music was great, so I bought one of their CD's they sold after the show; their newest album is called "Dilapidated Beauty", it has a song on it with the same title and that's where I first heard that word.

Another word, I find really cool - because of its pronunciation - is "deteriorate", I mean, that's hilarious!! Or even better: "deterioration" that one sounds so cool...
Small world of words!

Deterioration is a good word, I agree... 'The pemmican showed signs of deterioration, even the can was rather dilapidated.'

*lol* That one's funny hehe...
Another word which I guess sounds great is "emergency" (Now, I wonder why all these words bear some negative connotations... ), especially because I pronounced it wrong just after I'd learnt it at school and got laughed at *hehe*.
I said emer'GENcy instead of e'MERgency.

I love to deliberately mispronounce words because it can be fun to see just how incomprehensible they become as a result... coincidentally, emerGENcy is one of the words I like to mispronounce. PedesTERian (instead of pedESTrian) is another.

One could create a whole other language doing this. It's all about, as one wag once put it, putting the emPHASis on the wrong syllAble.

Holy crap. I thought I was the only one who did that. My brothers and I , well, my one specific brother and I always do that with words. It started with the world Exactly. EXactly, exACTly, exactLY...and it just graduated from that. Maybe this should have gone in weird habits.

Might be a gut idea for a little temporary house trading adventure here. Connect the folks who live where the other folks always wanted to and switch places for a week or 2. BTW hi there, Pemmican!!!

Little late, but thanks for the reply about (and I can spell it correctly now, no cheating!) "tschüß" - but isn't the ß (we call it the "ringel-s") "forbidden" now in Germany? (if you know what I mean) I thought that with the new spelling, they discouraged the use of the "ringel-s" but instead of that encouraged to use "-ss". But I could be wrong. Anyway, you Germans are still using it right?

Hi Rick,

we still use the "ß", we call it either "sharp s" as it's always pronounced voiceless, as in engl. 'so' or "Eszet" as it's a contraction of the two letters s+z.
The new spelling rules just reduced it to the cases where it's following a long vowel or diphthong, in all other cases you use "ss" now.
However, most people are not satisfied with the new spelling rules and avoid them at all (so do I) and as the new spelling rules are only obligatory for schools, you can still use the old ones so far...

Switzerland got rid of "ß" years ago already, here you write all words with "ss".

Whenever there's no ß-sign on a keyboard though, ss can be used instead also in Germany *hehe*

Thanks for explaining that, I heard that Der Bild was the first newspaper to ignore the new spelling rules, but it seems also a lot of Germans are just ignoring it hehehe. Hmmm I'll use -ss though, the ß is too hard to find haha.

Yep, "die" Bild or rather the Springer-publishing company where "Bild" is published withdrew from the new spelling rules first, some other publishing houses did the same so there are lots of newspapers with new spelling now and about as many that went back to the old spelling rules... chaos³, but anyway... I'll stick to the old rules, we got along perfectly well with them, the passed 100 years -> Enghlish has been using the same spelling rules for about 400 or 500 years now, so why change? *lol*

Oh, right, "die" Bild haha ... I do think the ß is a weird letter though ... but I don't see the use in forbidding its usage.

Yeah, "die Bild", but only when you're referring to the newspaper, because it's "die Zeitung" - if you mean "picture", then it's "das Bild"

It's not because it's a weird letter, it's because the spelling rules or when to use "ß" or when to use "ss" were too difficult:

Old Spelling:
No word could end in -ss, words ended in either -s or -ß.
ß was written within words when it was following a long vowel or diphthong and when it was the final sound in a word or part of a word; additionally, it was also written before "t", especially in forms of the verb, like "wissen" (to know), "ihr wißt" (you (jullie) know), even though the i is a short vowel.
In the remaining cases, you write "ss".

New Spelling:
ß is written after long vowels and diphthongs,
ss is used after short vowels.

That's it
Cheers!
