The ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) took control of the National Assembly Wednesday after three of its members were elected president and vice presidents of parliament.

During the parliament's first meeting for the 2011-2016 term, PSUV's Fernando Soto Rojas, a 77-year-old former guerilla, was elected president of the Assembly, teacher Aristobulo Isturiz elected as first VP, and former Communication and Information Minister Blanca Eekhout as second VP. Positions such as secretary and sub-secretary also went to the ruling party.

The PSUV enjoys a majority of 98 seats out of the 165 seats of the Assembly.

During the oath ceremony, Rojas said the National Assembly will guarantee the social improvement long awaited by the Venezuelan people.

He said the National Assembly will represent all social sectors.

I notice that in America they call Hugo a dictator. They suggest that democracy does not
really exist. Hugo is in fact the President, but the Socialist Party the ruling party does in
fact face an opposition of some size. 98 of a 165 seats is a majority not a dictatorship.
There are some wacky things that come out of Venezuela but then crazy things come out
of Washington and Ottawa as well.

When people have had the kind of government Venezuela had in the past I can see why
they went for something different. So many of the South American Countries were in
fact served badly by the interest of not only America, but the IMF who financially enslaved
the region for decades Countries like Brazil are booming even with a left of center government
because the have got their finances under control and are becoming energy self sufficient.
We are doing neither at the moment.

No democracy is perfect...

Pat Robertson calls for assassination of Hugo ChavezVIRGINIA BEACH (AP) — Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson suggested on-air that American operatives assassinate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to stop his country from becoming "a launching pad for communist infiltration and Muslim extremism."

'We have the ability to take him (Chavez) out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability,' Robertson said.

Ironically Jesus was a socialist just like Chavez. If he was a capitalist he could have charged for fish, loaves of bread, wine, medical services, miracles...

Actually you are not far from the truth. Christ spoke out against the current
direction of society that was run by Rome, and fascist state that ruled the
world. He also spoke out against money lenders who were operating in the
Temple itself. All of the preaching about humanity and how we are supposed
to treat each other all socialist concepts. However he did speak to some of
the issues in a very conservative manner as well. I believe he was
socially progressive and somewhat fiscally conservative. He was not big on
people getting into debt and he believed in people exercising personal
responsibility. Pat Roberts on the other hand is a fascist with no social
redeeming qualities at all.

Actually Cliffy I don't believe he believes his own rhetoric I think some of it is to be
provocative. Yes he is legally elected and has a majority in a democratic state.
The problem is that for so long this countries citizens were ripped off by America
and other countries and people switched to something else and this is the result.
Hugo like all other leaders will eventually run their course.

Hugo is doing everything Hitler did (extermination the only exception). One by one the people gave away their rights. Poor ignorant people, have no idea what is ahead for them.

Except Pat ain't running the country. Thank Gawd.

Ironically Jesus was a socialist just like Chavez.
There's a leap in logic.

Chavez is out for power, Jesus had no use for it.

You'd be best served if you didn't use an ideology to sift through your thoughts.

I wonder if that pecker head believes his own BS.
Good question Cliffy, I think Chavez does.

There doesn't seem to be any difference between him and radicam fundamentalist Muslim clerics.
Nah, I can't agree with you there Cliffy. Chavez doesn't use terrorism as a means of spreading religion.

The amazing thing is, Chavez is a devout Christian. Despite having a parting of ways with the RCC, he still maintains that Jesus is by his side in his Presidency.
