Cuba to Lay Off 500,000 Government Workers - DailyFinance

So long Cuba! So long Glorious Revolution!

Half a million government workers being layed off. That is 1 in 5 Cubans finding themselves out of work and looking to the private sector for work. Of course there is not much of a private sector now is there?

What are they to do? Hmmmm.... reforms?

Via condios to the old ways...time to open up and let freedom take its course.

They withstood 50 years of US sanctions and embargoes because they kicked out a US backed corrupt government. And now you gloat. The US has been trying to bankrupt the country for half a century. No wonder they don't have a private sector. If you guys weren't such hard asses, Fidel could have been an ally but no, he dared to be socialist in the McCarthy era, so you forced him to seek help from the USSR.

Now you smell blood and you rejoice. Now you get to exploit the Cuban people, have all the Cuban cigars that YOUR government denied you all these years. You are a sick and twisted people.

Eagle, if someone gloated about the unemployment rate in the US right now, and how you all had it coming because of your fiscal and international policies, you'd be on them like white on rice and FURIOUS about the anti-American sentiment being allowed on forum.

LOL. C'mon Cliffy. They sought help from the Soviets all on their own. Castro booted out the Yanks and has now reaped what he has sown. They had every opportunity to build a private sector on their own and they chose another path.

Now it is time for them to take their place among the other Carribean nations.

It's a sad day for you isn't it? I know it is. Oh well. This was bound to happen and yes it is time for us to chuckle a bit. Soon us Yanks will flood that island. I told you Cuba was going to give way.

Now Cubans will be exploited by Capitalists instead of communists.

Yippee!

Are the Cuban people some brainless, spineless subset of humanity? I've never understood this, having never been there. Is it an island full of special needs people? Because it seems to me that if it opens up and they get a voice, a vote, a choice in how their country runs, where they get to go live, etc., that perhaps they might just take that choice and make decisions for themselves? But anytime anyone talks about Cuba the only options ever presented are essentially, who will own them. I find that a unique way to look at a bunch of people who presumably have brains and opinions, no? What I've seen of Cubans on tv doesn't SEEM to equate them to confused bush people with no knowledge of the outside world.

You're right, I most likely would. However I was not gloating about the people losing their jobs more than I was gloating about the Castro government unable to sustain its Revolution.

So because people have a vote you think they have control?

This is what I want. For the Cuban people to have a voice and the Castro Dictatorship to fail. It looks like I will have both.

It always amazed me how many Yanks and Canadians wanted the Castro government to succeed in their perpetual oppression while they enjoy their freedoms.

yeah, and people who comment on how the US government should have foreseen 9/11 as a result of its policies, aren't commenting on the people who suffered either. They too are commenting on the government and its role in what its policy reaps. But people FREAK and throw the anti-American card out. You're gloating over the suffering of a country full of people. I find it no less palatable than what you would totally lose it on other people for.

You can't sustain what is a proven failed system.

Now you are putting words in my mouth. I don't gloat over the Cuban peoples suffering, I gloat over the Casto government finally giving way. I gloat over the moonbats shock of Castro finally admitting his policies are unsustainable.

Now, it appears, that eventually the Cuban people just might have a say on how their country is run. They might have a choice. I am not so sure if they will as that remains to be seen. However with 1 in 5 Cubans soon to be out of work something may have to give.

Not just a vote, no, but it's a damn good start. Choice and freedom are the biggest factors.

Is it?

How much control do you think we have?

Or the US that has two parties that act the same way and controlled by lobby groups who fund million dollar campaigns.

It's a joke that we call ourselves democracies and we try to sell that to other countries as well.

Perhaps Cuba will find a way to prevent this but I doubt it.

Money talks and greed will reign.

Well, you have the freedom to own a corporation and pay yourself well from that endeavour. You have the freedom to move away if you needed. You have the freedom to invest in lobbying the government for things that you are passionate about. You have a voice, make no mistake.

All true, but no real political control.

Big money controls politics and the message.

I fear for the people of Cuba.

I have been there many times, not just on the resorts but around Havana and outer areas. They are poor but are provided with a good education, health care and are happy....believe it or not. Money and things haven't made them happy.

Have no fear Avro. You'll soon be rubbing elbows with us Yanks down there and all will be well.

I'd believe that if I didn't also see the escape stories from Cuba. Sure, some people are happy. But if you're not happy, you should be able to leave.

I don't go there anymore....it's for people who take cheap vacations.

I'd believe that if I didn't also see the escape stories from Cuba. Sure, some people are happy. But if you're not happy, you should be able to leave.

Sure some flee, but it's not as many as you think.

Many people leave Canada and the US to live elsewhere...it happens.
