Construction is nearing completion on an immense Saudi Arabian version of Big Ben. The enormous clock will be situated in a tower 607 metres tall and it is hoped by the builders that it will convince the rest of the world to switch from using Greenwich, England as the Prime Meridian to using Mecca instead.

Mecca timepiece aims to punch GMT's clock

Somehow I think getting the nations using GMT as the basis for their time zone are going to be difficult to convince. After all, we still can't get Saskatachewan to use Daylight Savings Time.

I agree and why would we change anyway? You know the old saying - "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". I think that is applicable here.

Meanwhile GMT itself is no longer referred to by astronomers, having been superseded by Co-ordinated Universal Time in 1972 after the development of more accurate atomic clocks.

Apparently it's just a bragging point anyhow - but some of those "scientists" sound pretty whacked....

No magnetism....

I've heard of it, I think it's some dumb idea about changing every !#$!%#$ clock in the house twice a year because it supposedly makes the summer days longer, or something.

...it is hoped by the builders that it will convince the rest of the world to switch from using Greenwich, England as the Prime Meridian to using Mecca instead.
I'm sure that'll work about as well as the French attempt to use Paris as the prime meridian. Some Muslim nations might switch, nobody else will, which will cause great confusion. Mecca's about 40 degrees east of Greenwich according to Google Earth's coordinates, which would mean shifting all time zone boundaries by 10 degrees (a zone is 15 degrees wide) or about 20 minutes. Not going to happen.

What would be the benefit of switching?:lol::lol: As for Daylight Savings Time the only benefit to it was the cows liked it.:lol::lol:

It's many things. Think of it as exercise for both body and brain. At least twice a year, one must stand, walk all around their house finding the many clocks to move the hour ahead or back. The brain exercise comes twofold. "What part of the clock do I use to move the hands/numbers with and/or do I Spring forward or Fall backwards". However, even this effort is changing. Most clock radios' now come with a DST button which you simply push or click.
I do like DST but ---- I wish we just had DST all year round instead of the switching. Getting harder and harder to do those twice a year exercises. At least the telephone and the computer look after themselves.

I have nothing against "Daylight Saving Time" but I'm not sure why we have to involve the clock.
