Britain, along with Poland and the Czech Republic, want to house US "Star Wars 2" missile systems.

The system would protect whatever country it is based in and probably Europe as a whole.

Star Wars 2: US missile project

Out of this world ... US missiles will intercept incoming nukes and destroy them in a 16,000mph collision in the atmosphere. The debris would then harmlessly burn up

TONY Blair has agreed that US missiles can be based in Britain as part of a giant shield to stop a nuclear holocaust.

The “Star Wars 2” project would protect the UK from any North Korean or Iranian nuclear missile attack.

Mr Blair has been in top secret talks with President George Bush since the autumn.

Details of the plan are revealed in America’s Missile Defence Agency budget plans seen by The Sun.

Last night Downing Street said: “The Prime Minister thinks it is a good idea that we are part of the consideration by the US. We believe it is an important step towards providing missile defence coverage for Europe.”

Prime Minister-in-waiting Gordon Brown — already in favour of replacing the UK’s Trident nuclear weapons with a more advanced nuclear weapons system — also backs the move.

The multi-billion dollar US system would protect its allies.

Missiles based around the world would intercept enemy nukes deep inside space. The impact would destroy both the weapons — and the debris would burn up in the atmosphere after a 16,000mph collision.

The £20.5million-a-throw missiles are set to be sited at US Air Force bases in Suffolk.

Classified US documents read: “Ballistic missiles will remain the weapon of choice among our potential adversaries for the foreseeable future.

“The destructive power of ballistic missiles remains a serious threat to the US, our deployed forces, friends and allies.”

The Czech Republic and Poland have already volunteered to have the defence system on their soil.
