CAMBERLEY, England (AFP) - To the strains of "God Save the Queen" and a sergeant-major barking orders, Prince Harry, the red-headed party animal of the British royal family, formally embarked on his army career as he graduated from the elite Sandhurst military academy.

His grandmother Queen Elizabeth II, who turns 80 on April 21, and father Prince Charles were both present for the passing out ceremony on Wednesday where Harry and 218 other officer cadets in crisp blue uniforms, each carrying thin silver swords, received their commissions after 44 weeks of gruelling training.

"Many of you will deploy on operations within months or even weeks. I wish you every success in your chosen career," said the monarch in remarks to the newly minted officers which made no reference to her 21-year-old grandson.

Harry -- who, true to character, joined army buddies last week at an upmarket lap dancing club -- has chosen to join the Blues and Royals of the Household Cavalry regiment, serving in an armoured reconnaissance unit.

As Second Lieutenant Harry Wales, he will train to become a troop commander, in charge of 11 enlisted men and four light tanks -- a job that could soon see him on front-line duty in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Prince Harry is taking his role as a Army Officer very serious. He could have easily asked for a cushy Military position instead he could be going to War in Afghanistan or Iraq.

the "firm" as the Queen calls it, wouldnt mind a little "accident" happening to this rebel, none- Charles- related kid.......if so, then WATCH OUT HARRY>...

I have serious doubts that Her Majesty the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland would ever intervene in any orders to send forces on a mission abroad, whether or His Royal Highness Prince Harry is, or isn't, in whatever groups may be involved.

British Prince Andrew served as a Sea King helicopter pilot in HMS Invincible during the war, flying anti-submarine patrols. His helicopter was equipped with a Marconi Searchwater radar and acted as an improvised Airborne Early Warning platform, making it a valuable target. He revealed in an apparently inadvertent admission shortly after the war that he also flew missions as an Exocet missile decoy.

Strange the Canadian elite wannabe "Royal Family Dudes", the Trudeau and Mulroney offspring never dared serve in the miltary.

Not that I heard of anyway.

The Falkland War had some serious casualties involved. However, it was an entirely different scenario to Afghanistan or Iraq. In the Falklands, Andrew was tightly controlled as to where his mission lay, and he was not placed in areas that would put him in high risk danger. There was a real difference in flying around controlled waterways, than entering into a combat zone over Afghanistan or Iraq.

The danger to the Royal Family in Afghanistan or Iraq would not be that Harry was killed. This would be a sad but politically acceptable scenario. What would be a crisis would be the abduction and ransom of Harry as other hostages. This scenario would be impossible for the Royal Family to negotiate out of, and I believe that this is the reason he will never be placed in a situation that would incur that possibility.
