I started this thread so we could seperate the Military from the Oil Industry. It is my personal belief that the Oil Industry has grown larger than any existing country can control, its corrupt and evil.
Globally we need an organization that is independant to hold Oil Companies accountable, The Oil Industry needs to grow a conscience. Example: Nigeria, Exon Mobile (not 100% sure if this is the company) pollutes Tribal communities, arms thugs to maintain there interest and inforce their rules, discard human beings as if they where cock-roaches. Refuses to pay Complaintants their restitution when they win law suits, they think they are un-touchable, I fear they are. They need to be held accountable am I wrong.

It is Shell in Nigeria.
And I agree totally with you Sassylassie. Individual groups and nations can't control these corporations by themselves. Look what happened to the writer Ken Saro-Wiwa he was executed.
So an international organization should be created to deal with infractions by these corporations.

Shell and Exon Mobile. I have friends flying off-shore in Nigeria and things are really getting scary. One emailed me the other day and he told me he told his employer "Transfer me or I quit." One helo had a bullet put thew it, no one was harmed-lucky.

Well that is what happens when you allow the Ogoni people and other Niger Delta people suffer under extreme poverty when they have black gold under their feet.
And having a corrupt government in charge doesn't help as well.

You are on the mark. The villages are being polluted beyond repair, they seek restitution and the courts award it and the oil companies don't comply. The depth of suffering and poverty is unbelievable, yet the oil execs and the parent companies are dripping money. It's beyond my comprehension that nothing is being done. They treat human beings like trash, no worse than trash.

Now, you can say that Shell shouldn't deal in that country, but its the government who sets the rules. And the government of Nigeria is run by thieves.
When you are saying that Shell should give more to the Ogoni people, what you are saying is that Shell should intervene in the internal affairs of the nation. How the government revenues are distributed is the business of the government. How would you feel if Exxon started saying how oil revenues are cut up in Canada? Why would that be any different in Nigeria?

I'm not excusing everything the oil industry has done, because the oil industry - like individuals, organizations, industries, churches, governments (including Canada) - has done bad things. But they are not the primary cause behind bad things around the world. It's a fun, easy whipping boy for the Left, and certainly you can point to anecdotes about where the oil industry has done bad things, but, for the most part, the industry does not cause these events. They may shape them from time to time, but they (usually) do not cause them.

Do you have any idea what's going on in the two-bit (pseudo)dictatorships that the opil companies work in? There are often deep seated cultural/religious divides. The oil companies don't get involved, they're just there, doing what they do, drill oil. If the governemnt collapses and civil war/anarchy breaks out, it's hardly the oil companies fault.

In the past week almost all threads have been hijacked by the War and Fighting brigade. How small you must be to sink to degrading and insulting someone who doesn't agree your male War and fighting mentality. I was talking about corruption and lack of conscience. I won't continue with this discussion, In fact I won't be back to this forum.

Last summer when gas prices went skyrocketing for those LONG LONG 2 weeks, I tried to remember which gas stations were ripping us off, only 1 was not..the name escapes me...it's down by the lakeshore...oddly enough...the closest gas station to the Pickering Nuclear Power Plant!
HmmmI smell a big hairy conspiracy, but I better keep my mouth shu about it, I dont wanna be labaled a conspiracy nut..or Oil Terrorist!!!!!!!!!
And they said that the gas went up because of the storms in the Florida keys disrupting ferry lines.

It's difficult to separate oil from war and politics in a discussion. There are Texans running the US who have big ties to oil and the easiest way to high oil prices is war. We've gone from $13bbl under peace and prosperity to $60bbl under war and political chaos in a matter of 7 years. There's a little thing called conflict of interest in US government that know seems to care about. In Canada, in order to win federally now you need western support. The Chinese are in need of oil. Good luck trying to get an alternative fuel vision established. Albertans will luv ya for that.
If oil prices fall significantly the TSX will sink faster than a tech balloon. P/E ratios are already higher than historical averages for the sector. Lower the oil earnings and see what happens to the economy. Income trusts will be a wreck too.
Bush said "Americans are addicted to oil". The consumers aren't. Consumers could easily accept ethanol, like Brazilians. It's the producers, refiners, and financial markets that are addicted. Western governments have set the stage to make everyone but the consumer addicted to oil.
