Two U.S. Allies Leaving Iraq, More May Go

By WILLIAM J. KOLE, Associated Press Writer 4 minutes ago

Two of America's allies in Iraq are withdrawing forces this month and a half-dozen others are debating possible pullouts or reductions, increasing pressure on Washington as calls mount to bring home U.S. troops.

Bulgaria and Ukraine will begin withdrawing their combined 1,250 troops by mid-December. If Australia, Britain, Italy, Japan, Poland and South Korea reduce or recall their personnel, more than half of the non-American forces in Iraq could be gone by next summer.

Japan and South Korea help with reconstruction, but Britain and Australia provide substantial support forces and Italy and Poland train Iraqi troops and police. Their exodus would deal a blow to American efforts to prepare Iraqis to take over the most dangerous peacekeeping tasks and craft an eventual U.S. exit strategy.

"The vibrations of unease from within the United States clearly have an impact on public opinion elsewhere," said Terence Taylor of the International Institute for Strategic Studies in Washington. "Public opinion in many of these countries is heavily divided."

Although the nearly 160,000-member U.S. force in Iraq dwarfs the second-largest contingent — Britain's 8,000 in Iraq and 2,000 elsewhere in the Gulf region — its support has shrunk substantially.

this relates......albeit indirectly..:

"The President fails to see and confront the truth about the war in Iraq."

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT

Statement from U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer:

The President fails to see and confront the truth about the war in Iraq.

First, he refuses to acknowledge that the Iraq war has nothing to do with the 9/11 attack on our country by al Qaeda, and it has diverted us from our appropriate response to that attack which was to go into Afghanistan and hunt Osama bin Laden.

Second, he refuses to acknowledge the fact that our long term presence in Iraq is fueling the very insurgency that the President vows to end.

Third, the President refuses to acknowledge that any mistakes were made and that this war was based on false pretenses.

Fourth, he ignores the tremendous financial burden on our citizens, and he completely ignores the thousands of wounded that need to hear that they will not be forgotten and that they will receive the care they need.

Finally, the President even refuses to acknowledge that Iraqi government officials believe that we can withdraw within a two-year time frame, and he continues to demean those members of Congress who disagree with him.

The President used this speech to lash out in a very personal way against those who believe the best strategy for success is an accelerated training of Iraqi security forces and a drawdown of American troops, starting with the National Guard. Once we clearly state that we do not intend to stay in Iraq forever, the insurgency will be diminished and our brave men and women can begin to come home.

The President’s failure to address the concerns of the American people and the Congress is a devastating blow to everyone who hoped to hear the President articulate a clear mission and a projection of when our troops can return home.

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT

what planet does this bloke live on??? Can he be further from the reality of the situation.

(wonder if he will thank those that went along with him on HIS Iraq crusade or bash them for being unfaithful to HIS cause........as one never knows which way this bloke will go ..

I bet you OB, the bashing will start soon.

you mean of the "allies" that are leaving????

Wouldn't surprise me one bit. There is NO more underhanded, dirty regime on this planet at the moment than the bush cabal.

( at least with the leaders that bush spends time despising.......are predictable and one knows where one stands. With bushstrauss co. the winds can turn against one in a split second. When one considers it ........the bush goons are traitors to the world at large. Is there anyone they haven't crossed with their hypocracy.

Watching this closely as the cess pool that the bush goons go into for their tactics seems dirtier and almost bottomless........but that could change. ........as they have been repeating their same dirty tactics now.

He's like a man living in a dream. I watched his speech yesterday and he talks about defeating the "enemy". From all reports, the "enemies", are Iraqis who weren't enemies before the country was bombed to ratshit but Bush doesn't seem to know this.

the bloke could not identify the "enemy" if he were to trip over it......... as he is the one that created most of the "enemies" he has now.

He wants the Iraqis to be enemies ......so he can continue to bomb the crap out of THEIR country , while securing both the oil fields and the construction of his massive new military bases in that region. If ever a leader NEEDED enemies to fullfill his own selfish and destructive agenda ..........we are seeing it in bush. So why not keep creating enemies.......??? as this continues to serve his megalomaniac type purpose. the bloke shoulda been locked up long time ago. (in a forensic -psychiatric unit)

RE: Two U.S. Allies Leavi

I bet some of the "Coalition of the previously brainwashed" are regreting ever buying "W's" bullshit and helping the Bush Crime Family in Iraq.

I also think if America or the Bush Crime Family need "help" in another part of the world, help from other nations won't be so willing anymore.

Reality though USA has 160,000 in Iraq and next largest country is Britain with 8000 and the rest negliable. So he just asked them to send some token troops so he could come up with the "Coalition" so he could say it was not just US in there but other countries, he just used them,so he could use it, as a cover for his own personnel agenda.

yes, indeedie. What a sleezebag !! Now he is operating on auto pilot. Keeps repeating the same old crap each time he opens his lying mouth.(and to carefully picked audiences too. HIs tactics would make the likes of hitler proud.

Ya know......this is a big moment in history.......and I am grateful every dang day that Cretien had the fortitude to say NO to the bush regime when it really counted. Sure we had to deal with the usual bush/us childish temper tantrums of attempted revenge......but we will survive .......bush will not.
