Why I like this board's ECHO CHAMBER

I got friends of all political stripes but it is the conservatives and liberals who are so sure of themselves that get an argument from me.

The ones who are so sure, you will notice them mostly talking with the like minded and show the hand to those who aren't.

But it is generally universal human nature to find an echo of our own thoughts, a validation, maybe even a need to be sure that we are right.

This board is one of those echo chambers with a lot of the like-minded commingling, a sea of nodding heads and it is staffed by well-read, accomplished and intelligent people, but still this echo chamber reverberates and ricochets through the cyber fiber finding straw men to knock down?

When there is so much agreement, does it not set off a warning to you all ?

I agree completely, and I'm sure everyone else here does, too.

assuming that everyone here agreed completely with everyone else........it might set off "warning bells." But warning bells of what??? A certain common ground in thinking??? A certain "unity" of thought about some very serious issues??? Actually it is amazing that there are as many common denominators in thinking as there are here. Not usually the case.

Common denominators do not imply blind agreement without some thought behind it. Most on here ......(IMHO) are truly indpendant thinkers ..... and if common denominators evolve......that is part of the process and quite revealing .

I find it difficult to disagree with anything you say, Jim, although that's largely due to the fact that your confused, badly punctuated ramblings rarely make any sense.

Actually, Jim, you haven't really explained why you like the echo chamber aspect of this forum, as stated in the thread title. I agree with everything else you said, though. I see no benefit to a group of like-minded people sitting around agreeing about everything. It smacks of a good ol' boys club, and although it might seem a pleasant enough pastime, it makes for a lazy debating style (because the debating muscle, as it were, never gets exercised). If you don't have people with opposite views to challenge you , you start to forget why you believe what you believe. Only by defending those beliefs do you remain clear on the concept.

LOL !!! Especially to those who couldn't agree more !

And yes I never did explain why I like this particular echo chamber, as my confused syntax is emblematic of my kind of thinking, heh heh.

Despite finding myself at odds with a lot of conclusions on this board, despite recoiling from the overconfident sureness of this board, I do like the design format of this site, the advisors who monitor (i myself felt their wrath) and despite the um, well uh, what was my point ?

Haggis Mcbagpipe stated my sentiment most clearly.
Hardluck Henry wants me to be more clear, but I got you now Mr Henry, the inconsistency of agreeing with something you don't understand !! Hah !!!
Ocean Breeze wonders why we should doubt a preponderance of agreement.
But thank you for the responses.

And here's one more part of the idea of the echo chamber again.

Do we wish to hear our own echo ?

And do we deny the reality of that?

Sophomoric you think?

I think the wish runs deep.

I don't necessarily come here to argue, or even debate, although I do have disagreements with many people on many issues. I find the forums useful for exposing myself to other people's ideas, I hear some interesting views and have probably learnt a fair amount in the process. I've been given some good links, book ideas, new music and suchlike, too, and had fun in the process. (Blah - I'll be calling for a group hug, next. )

Oh, btw, Jim - I didn't say I agreed with anything, I said I found it difficult to disagree. Not the same think (at least, I don't think it is ) I, too, obviously need to make myself clearer ... now, how can I put this ... ?

Clear enough, now?

Yes, Henry, we know...

...and on behalf of the other forum members, the moderators, and the administration of this site, we'd like you to refrain from exposing yourself further...this is a family-oriented site after all...

LOL !! Somehow Hardluck Henry mutated from a sensible reasonable fellow to a raving angry yet humorous lunatic !!! We watch for more developments here. I applaud all the facets of this emergence.
