Let's understand what mishandling means. Under the rules the Pentagon later instituted at Guantanamo, proper handling of the Koran means using two hands and wearing gloves when touching it. Which means that if any guard held the Koran with one hand or had neglected to put on gloves, this would be considered mishandling.

On the scale of human crimes, where, say, 10 is the killing of 2,973 innocent people in one day and 0 is jaywalking, this ranks as perhaps a 0.01.

Moreover, what were the Korans doing there in the first place?

The very possibility of mishandling Korans arose because we gave them to each prisoner.

What kind of crazy tolerance is this? Is there any other country that would give a prisoner precisely the religious text that that prisoner and those affiliated with him invoke to justify the slaughter of innocents?

If the prisoners had to have reading material, I would have given them the book "Portraits 9/11/01" -- vignettes of the lives of those massacred on Sept. 11.

Why this abjectness on our part? On the very day the braying mob in Pakistan demonstrated over the false Koran report in Newsweek, a suicide bomber blew up an Islamic shrine in Islamabad, destroying not just innocent men, women and children, but undoubtedly many Korans as well. Not a word of condemnation. No demonstrations.

NOT A WORD.

Even greater hypocrisy is to be found here at home. Civil libertarians, who have been dogged in making sure that FBI-collected Guantanamo allegations are released to the world, seem exquisitely sensitive to mistreatment of the Koran.

A rather selective scrupulousness.

When an American puts a crucifix in a jar of urine and places it in a museum, civil libertarians rise immediately to defend it as free speech. And when someone makes a painting of the Virgin Mary, smears it with elephant dung and adorns it with porn, not only is that free speech, it is art -- deserving of taxpayer funding and an ACLU brief supporting the Brooklyn Museum when the mayor freezes its taxpayer subsidy.

He sounds like a nut job to me.

None of those prisoners have been convicted, they are being abused and the rights under the Geneva convention are being violated.

Most civilized countries would give exact religious material, They would give the bible or any other book. Most civilized countries do not break international law, America is violating Geneva convention and the president is a war criminal.

"W" is no better than what he "alleges" the people he holds without charge or counsel in Cuba. I wonder how many in Gitmo are innocent? Georgie just abuses his powers.

Repeating your standard response like a mantra makes what Krauthamer said no less true.

Well its the truth. Bush is violating human rights. No question about that. Lots of proof to prove it or don't you watch the news?

Anybody remember what happened to the first American POW in Afghanistan. The guy who fell out of the chopper. I do. I think about that all the time. I never heard the words "human rights" or "Geneva Convention" on his behalf. As Jimmoyer so rightly points out, the hypocrisy is running rampant.

All the detainees at gitmo have been given a hearing at a military tribunal. Those who are innocent will be released, as many have been already (not just a few of them being re-captured fighting in Afghanistan). I haven't heard anything about any detainees being summarily executed.

RE: KORAN USE---COMIC IRO

If you read my post I said "Civiliazed countries".

All the detainees at gitmo have been given a hearing at a military tribunal.

And thats fair? No lawyer, no rights. Don't forget about the torture there and in Iraq.

The US is supposedly a civilized country they should know better and set an example, which they are not. The US should be better than Afghanistan Taliban, but obviously from whats been reported in Iraq, Gitmo they are not.

Jay, the example they are setting is turning the world against them...nations that value human rights are appalled at the reports of all the violations that the US and British military is being accused of...and the US government's flippant responses to these accusations...

There needs to be an international inquiry into these allegations, and those who are accountable need to be held as such...until that happens, the US government will continue to be regarded as a rogue nation...

"What happens when you kick a ant pile?"

Let’s just say that the ant pile is the World trade centre....some of the ants jumped to their deaths...others burned alive.

The US is bashing some heads together...big deal. Lets be thankful they aren’t reacting even harsher.

War isn't a sport where we all play nice. Those who think it is... shouldn't get involved.

So you don't see a difference between being kept awake at night for interrogation and being shot on the spot. You don't see a difference between being forced naked onto a human pyramid and being shot on the spot. You don't see a difference between having your holy book desecrated, and being shot on the spot.

The record may not be perfect, but you and I know about it...what does that tell you? We are appalled by the transgressions by those who represent us, and we punish them. They brag about their transgressions and make heroes of the perpetrators.

I see lots of differences between the U.S. and the Taliban. I don't even have to look hard. You don't see a difference? You don't think the U.S. is better than Afghanistan Taliban?

Unbelievable.

RE: KORAN USE---COMIC IRO

The Taliban is bad and America is bad by disreguarding International law.

Torture is illegal under the Geneva convention but the US disreguards that. The US is torturing people. In Iraq and Cuba.

The US is a first world country and knows International Law but they thumb their noses at it. The US should know better but they are proving they are not any better.

Torture is a horrible thing to do to anyone and what right does the US have doing it? No good reason. They have no right to torture people but do it anyways. So in that sense they are as bad as taliban. Just because someone else does it or does it worse like the Taliban it does not make what Georgie is doing right.

To no1important:

You hold a higher standard for the U.S.

Thank you.

You should.

But although you hold nobility in holding a higher standard for the US, you hold no standard for what anyone else does.

Proof of this ?

What anyone else does no where near inspires the outrage, anger, emotion, energy.

This is an admission hard for anyone.
