RE: US screwing around in

There's oil in Venezuela, and Chavez is the one who made OPEC viable again. There have also been a lot of left-leaning politicians being elected in South America since Chavez came to power. He does one nobody else has ever tried there before...he helps the poor people. The example he has set is spreading.

Canada should be inviting him on state visits, but instead we invite George Bush.

The will never stop minding other peoples business.
Amercia has become an empire, using economics as it territory, and the goal is not to spread democracy the goal is to preserve the power of the empire.

AT least you only have to deal with him on state visits, we're stuck with him all the time. Anyway, the positive regime changes in Latin America may be the best thing to come out of PNAC fixation with the middle east. However, we have to remember that the US intervention in the Dominican Republic occured during the Vietnam war.

Cuba has been very active in setting up a functional education system in Venezuala. The country has a failing infastructure with little money put into highways since the 1980s oil money dried up. The CIA had 'agents provecteur'? in Venezuala prior to the last attempted overthrow of Chavez. I saw them rabble rousing in fishing villages and again and again in various parts of the country. A well financed group. The CIA were involved in the kidnapping of Chavez but he left a crack unit hiding in the palace. There is little reason for him to trust the U.S. but Canada could do much to help and prevent a turn to the 'dark side'. Its one of my favourite countries.

I'd love to go there, Pete.

Cuba has supplied a lot of doctors in exchange for oil as well. The program has gotten the people solidly behind Chavez, which is what really saved him in the attempted coup and the US back referndum to depose him. The US was also instrumental in the oil strike there...where the rich people went on strike.

Now the US is wondering why Chavez bought a bunch of AK-47s from the Russians. Gee, maybe they are afraid the US will be backing a dirty little proxy war like they've done so many times before...

They don't need to meddle with Venezuela.... just wait for the country to go bankrupt the way of Cuba. "Nationalizing" foreign owned business... jacking up taxes on foreign oil firms.... just watch the capital flee from Venezuela.

It's been five or six years MMMike. The Venezuelan people are pleased with their leader. That's in spite of meddling by USA.

So everyone here supports Chavez, despite what's been reported. Is it all propaganda? Is he a "nice" dictator? Seriously?

The only reason the US is messing with Chavez is because he has oil and no longer wants to sell it to the US

RE: US screwing around in

First of all he isn't a dictator, Said 1. He's been elected and he survived a referendum that attempted to remove him. Second of all, human rights in Venezuela have gotten better since he came to power. That's not to say that he's perfect, but he is far better than those who preceded him and those who the US has habitually backed in South America.

You should tell us what reports you've read though. There have been several instances of the US press reporting things that were just Bushite propaganda.

Here's something I found interesting. You may not have a problem with it, but it makes me weary. Chavez may have been elected, but he's a communist and I think he's going to prove to be dangerous for his people. http://www.venezuelanalysis.com/articles.php?artno=1030

Globovision is merely the worst of a bad lot though. Perhaps they were targeted (not a lot different than the way the Bush administration went after Howard Stern) or perhaps they were breaking the law and got caught.

The fact is that the privately owned media in Venezuela is all anti-Chavez and they are still allowed to operate. There have been ongoing regulation problems because the Venezuelan government did not have the resources to enforce the regulations, but they do have more resources now.

We don't know truly if that democracy is legitimate until we see another election there.

And the private media in Venezuela is an endangered species.

Once again America mucked it up down there, but watch the new Fidel of Latin America rise.
