Support for EU constitution slips in France

PARIS, March 15 (AFP) - Two and a half months before a national referendum, support for the European constitution in France has slipped further and now stands at 56 percent, according to an opinion poll Tuesday.

The findings published in Le Monde newspaper marked a two point drop in a month and corresponded exactly with another survey for L'Express magazine at the weekend.

According to the TNS-Sofres/Unilog poll, 37 percent of those asked expressed no point of view, and 34 percent said they could change their mind before the vote on May 29.

The "no" vote is strongest on the left, with 71 percent of Communist party supporters and 47 percent of Socialist party supporters opposing the EU
constitution, the poll found.

On the right 70 percent of supporters of President Jacques Chirac's Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) intend to vote for the constitution, it said.
