Cue the conspiracies. Brexit backers were urged to bring pens to the polls because they feared their votes would be erased and changed if they used the provided pencils.
They spread the word during Wednesday's vote through a hashtag: #usepens. It was trending in the U.K.
"#Brexit take a pen with you, don't fill the box with pencil they will surely erase it!!" tweeted one.
Polls leading into the close vote suggested many who planned to vote for Britain to get out of Europe feared the campaign was rigged. A YouGov poll found 46% of Leave voters believed it was "probably true" their vote would be tampered with.
However, it didn't take long for the #usepens campaign to be taken over to mock the conspiracy theorists.
"If you're worried about your pencil vote being erased, take a pen. Then push it through your eye and into your stupid f---ing brain," tweeted one angry Brit.
