Why stay in the EU when its capital is also the capital of jihadism in Europe?

Repeatedly in the run up to the EU in/out referendum on 23 June, David Cameron has told the British people that Britain is safer within the EU and that we need to remain in the organisation for the sake of our security.

But, as a deadly bomb explodes in the EU's capital, just yards from EU buildings, the British Prime Minister's comments now appear deluded....

Allison Pearson: why stay in the EU when its capital is also the capital of jihadism in Europe?

Thanks to open borders within the EU, and a fatally lax approach to vetting refugees, the lives of millions of Europeans have been put at risk, writes Allison Pearson

Next time you hear the Prime Minister say that Britain must remain in the EU for the sake of our security please think of Brussels. The de facto capital of the European Union is also the capital of jihadism in Europe. The calamitous Belgian security services let one of the Paris attackers, Salah Abdeslam, wander around his home district of Molenbeek for four months until his arrest just a few days ago. Molenbeek has long been a no-go area for police.

No doubt the horrifying terrorist attacks in Brussels airport will turn out to have links to that same ghetto. According to BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner, Belgian police are dependent for information on our own MI5. French security is not much better co-ordinated and France is still under a State of Emergency four months after the massacres in Paris.

Thanks to open borders within the EU, and a fatally lax approach to vetting refugees, the lives of millions of Europeans have been put at risk. The head of Europol warned recently that there are 5,000 Isis-trained jihadists at large in Europe after returning from Syrian training camps. Yet, the arrogant, unelected leaders in Brussels are so wedded to their unattainable ideal of ever closer union that they will not countenance putting a stop to the free movement of citizens.

Well, they may have no choice. On Tuesday, the border between France and Belgium was sealed. If it had been closed since November then Abdeslam would not have been able to dump his suicide vest, drive back to Brussels and plan more atrocities. Innocent men and women have been sacrificed on the altar of free movement.

Calling for an end to Europe’s open border agreement, former President Sarkozy said: “If we don’t react rapidly in the coming years our social system will explode.” Exactement.

As for the UK, we need to get the hell out of a dysfunctional organisation which puts its own survival above the safety of its people.
