The Egyptian parliament is drafting a law banning women from wearing the niqab veil. The ban will apply to wearing the clothing in public places and government institutions, it has been reported.

The news is never boring...

This will be interesting to follow.
__________________________
The full-face veil is worn by some followers of Islam and typically covers all of the wearer’s face other than their eyes. The clothing is common in Egypt which is a predominantly Muslim country.

MP Amna Nosseir, professor of comparative jurisprudence at Al-Azhar University, who has backed the ban, said that wearing the veil is not a requirement of Islam and in fact has non-Islamic origins. She has argued that it is a Jewish tradition which appeared in the Arabian Peninsula prior to Islam and that a variety of Quran passages contradict its use. Instead, she has advocated that the Quran calls for modest clothing and covered hair, but does not require facial covering.

A number of restrictions have been placed on wearing the niqab in Egypt in recent years. In February, Cairo University banned nurses and doctors from wearing it in medical schools and in teaching hospitals, arguing the ban would: “protect patients’ rights and interests.”

In September of last year, the university also banned academic staff from wearing the niqab in classrooms in response to complaints from students that it was too difficult for niqab wearers to communicate effectively with students.

But....but this is just so anti-something or another I'm sure.
That woman above must be anti-woman, or at least anti-
woman's rights or lack there of, and Egypt being a
predominantly Muslim country must be discriminating
against Muslims or tent manufacturers or something along
those lines....

But....but the face covering must be worn in banks, and
airports through customs, and citizenship ceremonies
'cuz it would be unfair and wrong to point out that this
has nothing to do with religious choice or freedoms!!
Surely they must still allow a full facial covering to be
worn for Passport & Drivers License photos? Oh the
inhumanity of injecting reason into such a situation!

Egypt! For Shame!! Shame on you!!!

Oh...Jewish origins? Well ban that sucker then, 'cuz it's
oppressive and all Jewishy and thus just plain wrong.

The professor is correct that covering the face never was an Egyptian practice. I have seen frescoes of every day Egyptian life over the centuries and cannot recall seeing women having their faces covered. Egyptian culture (one that has always been multi-ethnic) never adopted this practice which was done by Aryan tribes in the Persian empire.

However the professor is wrong when she asserts that this is a Jewish practice. In Genesis, Judah the father of all Jews is deceived by Tamar who was seen wearing a face vail {spelled with letter a, not e}. Because her face was covered he thought she was a "harlot". See Gen 38:14,15. Through this deception the Jewish tribes were created when they had sex and progeny.

Suffice it to say, a face veil is not consistent with ancient Egyptian or Jewish culture.

How ironic that an Islamic country is banning the burka, calling it "non-Islamic", whilst most countries in the West (with notable exceptions, such as France and Belgium) still allow women to wear it.

In Pakistan, most young women refuse to wear the burka as they think it is an outmoded and medieval practice which is used to subjugate women. They instead prefer to wear trendy, modern clothes.

And us PC mugs in the West allow women to wear it - or, to be more precise, in most cases, allow men to force women to wear it - all in the name of being PC and mulitculti.

Idiot judge. There is some merit in having elected judges instead of appointed. At least we would have the opportunity to weed out the bad ones.
