Ed Miliband stumbled as he left the stage last night following a grilling over Labour's record on the economy, immigration and welfare.

The Labour leader was taking part in one of three separate Question Time sessions on BBC One in Leeds, along with Prime Minister David Cameron and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg.

And he lost his footing while stepping off the stage at 9pm yesterday as he turned to wave to the audience -some of whom could then be seen laughing about the unfortunate incident.

The trip, which the Labour Party jokingly said was caused by Miliband "tripping on Cameron's sweat", was immediately compared to when Labour's Neil Kinnock fell into the sea on Brighton beach in October 1983 - creating a video that became part of the opening credits of Spitting Image.

Last night, Chancellor George Osborne told Politics Home of Mr Miliband's stumble: 'I'll leave you to interpret that and find the correct metaphor.'

With just six days to go before what is probably the closest and most unpredictable British General Election in history, with a Hung Parliament and the formation of another coalition government looking likely, around a THIRD or so of the country's 46 million voters remain undecided who to vote for, but Miliband will surely have persuaded many voters to vote Labour last night when he declared that, under no circumstances, will his party do a deal with Nicola Sturgeon's SNP. Miliband told the audience and the millions watching live on Tv that: "I would rather not become Prime Minister than do a deal with the SNP."

A poll conducted immediately after the programme showed that 44% thought Cameron had won; 38% thought Miliband had won.

Something very noticeable was that we had a more politically grown up and mature audience. Unlike the last TV debate, in which Nigel Farage complained had a left-wing audience (which is normal for such shows on BBC) which kept booing and hissing him but gave the left-wing politicians an easy rife, last night's was a nice balanced audience with people from all across the political spectrum which gave Miliband just as much a rough ride as Cameron.

Last night, Chancellor George Osborne told Politics Home of Mr Miliband's stumble: 'I'll leave you to interpret that and find the correct metaphor.'

But the Daily Mirror reported that Labour's deputy campaign chief Lucy Powell told journalists in the spin room: 'He slipped on David Cameron's sweat.'

And Match of the Day host Gary Lineker joked on Twitter: 'Thought Ed Miliband did well to stay on his feet. Many would have gone down under those circumstances, especially on the box.'

Meanwhile comedian David Baddiel tweeted: 'Liked Ed's tiny trip on the way out. Reminded me of his lovable inner klutz.'

The audience last night was more balanced and less left-wing. Some would say it's thanks to Farage!

Mr Miliband was last night accused of failing to learn the lessons of the mistakes of his last time in government and failing to respond to voters' concerns.

A snap poll showed Mr Cameron had won with 44 per cent saying he had performed best, while 38 per cent favour Mr Miliband. Some 18 per cent put Mr Clegg down as the winner.

Mr Miliband faced the toughest exchanges, as he was challenged over the embarrassing note left by Labour minister Liam Byrne in 2010 admitting that 'there is no money left'.

The Labour leader was told shadow chancellor Ed Balls should be sacked after he dismissed the letter as a joke - despite it leading to five years of austerity.

On stage: Mr Miliband takes part in a special Question Time programme with the other two main party leaders, during in which ruled out forming a coalition with the SNP, saying he would "rather not be Prime Minister than do a deal with them"
