China’s education minister has vowed to ban university textbooks which promote “western values”, state media said, in the latest sign of ideological tightening under President Xi Jinping.

“Never let textbooks promoting western values appear in our classes,” minister Yuan Guiren said, according to a report late Thursday by China’s official Xinhua news agency.

“Remarks that slander the leadership of the Communist Party of China” and “smear socialism” must never appear in college classrooms, he added according to Xinhua.

China’s universities are run by the ruling Communist party, which tightly controls discussions of history and other topics it construes as a potential threat to its grip on power.

Well unlike communist countries we don't have fences and guards keeping our citizens in so you can leave any time.

You are illinformed slave. We live right next door to the biggest per capita prison population on the planet and those inmates are slaved out to private enterprise. You'll be leaving long before I will.

I think this is a perfect example of why government needs to have a positive influence on social values.

I think we've pretty much proven that being more social libertarian (than this at least) is better for society.

How is it possible to trust government to produce a positive influence on social values when it listens exclusivly to camps alien to this society? In this respect of social values the market also rules and delivers and perverts those values nurtured in the electorate by that same electorate. We in the west have abandoned building and binding these values from the grassroots up and have fallen dumb to TV and bling fests. Our progress in social libertarian practice thus far has brought us to the brink of ruin and global war all because of an internationalist one size fits all social awarness, Je Suis Puke.

Just think how much worse it would be with a socialist government.

It's not about trust, it's simply about the ability a government has to give it's people more freedoms.

You can actually have that in a communist state - though I would agree that it's so improbable that democracy is always the better way.

China has adopted some form of capitalism and it is working quite well there. So much for those who criticize Western values.

Of course you're right, because earning $1.80 an hour for the average factory worker is the type of capitalism that we should implement here.

I don't blame the Chinese Communist Party. Western values of this era are coarse, degenerant, and unrefined. Besides, not all peoples are meant to experience individual liberty as conceived in the West. Individual liberty can only exist within a specific societal and institutional context.

The government gives nothing to the people, the government does what the people tell it to do, this is the basis of democracy, today that responsibility cannot be exercised because of the appauling education of the last hundred years foisted upon the electorate by the lids and suits. We have been rendered usless witless and hopeless by a century and more of rubbish schoolin. Democrasy can only be as effective as it's participants wits allow it. We have been rendered witless by capital. It's not capitals fault.
