Communism never really existed it was fascism under a different name
Capitalism doesn't work either and there in lies the rub. Neither free
enterprise or socialism or social democracy work in an open society.
They need to take parts from each other in order to balance the system.
As for democracy or what we sometimes call freedom is a far away dream
as well. Today its "Of course I believe in Democracy as long as its convenient"

from the new Manifesto,

why was there a complete lack of resistance when all members of the population were threatened, even those who carried out the atrocities most devotedly? Many Soviet citizens had displayed military courage and had risked their lives in battle: why did no one raise a hand against the tyrant, why did all go willingly to the slaughter?

Perhaps we will never know the real answer to these questions. If there is an answer or explanation as to why these evils were ended proper attribution should be made to Aleksandr Tvardovsky for opening the door to dissident writers who exposed the Soviet empire for what it was:

Tvardovsky, A.T. - SovLit.net - Encyclopedia of Soviet Authors

As editor of Novy Mir the West was finally allowed to see the real Soviet Union and this ultimately led to its dissolution.
