Approaching shoppers with the petition supporting FGM, she told them she wanted to protect her “culture, traditions and rights”.

In only 30 minutes 19 people signed it with some saying they believed FGM was wrong but because it was part of Ms Hussein’s culture they would add their names. Only one person refused to sign.

Of couse not, female circumcision should be banned. However the reticence among those who fear a legal prohibtion (And, it is not a left-right dichotomy as some bray) is that this prohibition may be extended to include male infant circumcision - a sacred cow in our societies. Personally, I have no hesitation in affirming the right of those adults, who maintain their god is phallic or vagin*l obsessed, to have various pieces lopped off. However, infants of either sex should be protected by the secular state from being mutilated at the whim of parents, church, mosque, or synagogue.
